Kurt Nacewicz scored 15 points and three other players added 10 points apiece to lead the Newtown boys’ eighth-grade travel team to a convincing 60-47 win over Westport last week.

Meanwhile, Alec Saviano tossed in a layup at the buzzer to send the Vikings into overtime with the Vipers in Intermediate Boys action – and, in overtime, is where Rich Sandler dropped in a key free throw to lift the Vikings to the win.

TRAVEL

Boys 8th

Rogers Park 42, Newtown 31 – Cole Depuy, John Grimaldi, Connor Collier, David Bray, Jacob Dauz and Mark Scheunemann played well, but the locals fell short against Rogers Park.

Newtown 60, Westport 47 – Kurt Nacewicz scored 15 points and Mark Scheunemann, Jacob Dauz and John Grimaldi added 10 apiece to lead Newtown to the win. Chris Marks, Ian Cooper, David Bray, Connor Collier and Cole Depuy were superb on defense.

Newtown 51, Bethel 38 – Despite a slow start, John Grimaldi pumped in 13 points, Connor Collier knocked down 11 and David Bray chipped in with nine to lead Newtown to the win. Kurt Nacewicz, Ian Cooper and Chris Marks anchored the D.

 

Girls 7th

Newtown 43, Darien 37 – Sara Kelley scored 17 points to lead Newtown over Darien. Kate Bowen (10), Kaitlin Marsden (8) and Jennifer Daily (6) completed the scoring for Newtown. Nicole Elias grabbed nine rebounds while Brittany Wiberg, Ally Modzelewski and Carolyn Fagan played well defensively for Newtown.

New Fairfield 29, Newtown 27 – Down eight points to start the fourth quarter, Newtown’s trapping defense brought them back … but they were unable to take the lead and fell to New Fairfield. Kate Bowen canned 12 points while Kaitlin Marsden and Jennifer Daily each chipped in with four. Stephanie Suhoza and Meghan Bridges played well defensively as they shut down New Fairfield’s high post attack.

Girls 6th

Newtown 26, Ridgefield 16 – Casey-Rose Kearns, Jen Smith, Sam Whitley and Cady Jackman’s rebounding and stealing the ball helped Maggie Donohue and Colleen Cunningham combine for 23 points and nine steals in a win over RIdgefield. Cady Jackman added three more points and Colleen Cunningham went to town blocking shots.

Brookfield 24, Newtown 22 – Alex Grant and Kristen Errico combined for eight points, Maggie Donohue had six points and 11 rebounds and Colleen Cunningham eight points and 11 rebounds.

IN-HOUSE

 

Junior Boys

Jaspers 50, Knicks 22 – Zach Conger scored 14 points to lead the Jaspers to the win. For the Knicks, Kenton Lord popped in 10 points.

Bobcats 53, Lakers 38 – Jeff Selezan poured in 18 points and Kyle Pickle added 14 more as the Bobcats clawed the Lakers. Kevin Walsh grabbed 14 rebounds and Tom Gilbert dished off four assists. For the Lakers, Tyler Edward canned 15 points as Dale and Nick Neves combined for 14. Sean O’Connell had 10 rebounds and six blocks ad Jeff DiNicola dished off eight assists.

Heat 35, Eagles 23 – John Fracker scored 14 points and Hiram Orama added five to lead the Heat to the win. Dan O’Connor made four steals as Steve Osmolik grabbed six rebounds. For the Eagles, Keith McGrath and Adam Schankman combined for 21 points as Anthony Gruce (four assists), Kyle O’Connor (eight rebounds) and Nickie Wolf played well.

Hawkeyes 37, Rockets 26 – Kyle McManus scored 13 points to lead the Hawkeyes to the win. Tom Mascher and Conor McNamara played well. For the Rockets, Peter Wlasuk and Ryan Goodridge combined for 17 points as Dan Spencer, Josh Jowdy and Kevin Carney all played well.

Yellowjackets 49, Nuggets 36 – Brian Reszoly scored 18 points and Eddie White dished off 11 assists as the ‘Jackets rolled. Ryan Schmidt chipped in with eight points as Sofion Ahtchi and Brandan Bennett played well. For the Nuggets, Harrison Gillis and Tucker Schmidt popped in eight points apiece while Chris Page registered eight blocks.

Wildcats 46, Celtics 45 – Jake DeVellis scored 28 points and Ethan Johnson added 11 to lead the Wildcats past the Celtics. Mitch Udiskey and Mike Gabor played well on D. For the Celtics, Joe Selezan scored 15 points as Trevor Todd added nine to lead the way. Ben Mahony made eight steals as Tony Vacaro and Mike McDonald played well on defense.

Huskies 58, Bullets 32 – Joe Cappiello scored 18 points and Zach Brazo added 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Huskies past the Bullets. AJ Ritchie had three assists and four steals. For the Bullets, Kevin O’Connell scored nine points while Rob O’Donnell dished off nine assists.

Intermediate Girls

Suns 29, Nighthawks 19 – Marilyn LaCroce, Stef Clavette and Breanne Lubinsky combined for 19 points to lead the Suns to the win. Lainey Audet had a fine all-around game as Keri Chernoff and Caitlin Dowling anchored the D. For the ‘Hawks, Pickles Paproski scored nine points, Jess Fossum had eight rebounds, and Jill Jagoe and Kelley Gaston played well.

Shamrocks 31, Huskies 25 (OT) – Kelley Anne Brophy scored 16 points and Jamie Keating grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Shamrocks to an overtime win. Alyssa Ruddy and Julie Ficks had great floor games. For the Huskies, Aria Brownell scored six points and Kyra Middleer, Alexis Black and Nicole Davies played well.

Da Bulls 33, Liberty 19 – Lauren Meyer scored 13 points and Taylor Benson added eight more to lift Da Bulls to the win. Colleen Cosgrove and Jessica Haitz played well. For the Liberty, Megan Gibbons, Erin Bull and Elizabeth Eiseman had strong performances.

Da Bears 31, Rimrockers 24 – Andrea Nazer and Emma Herring combined for 17 points to lift Da Bears past the Rimrockers. Katie Cummings chipped in with seven points. For the ‘Rockers, Ali Pliszka canned 11 points as Tori Picerno, Jade Mather, Carly Gehrman and Morgan Hopper had outstanding games.

Intermediate Boys

Vikings 48, Vipers 47 (OT) – Rich Sandler dropped in the key free throw in overtime to lift the Vikings to the win. Alec Saviano (13 points) hit a layup at the buzzer to send the game into the extra session. Thomas Murphy, Mike Gregorio and George Primavera played well. For the Vipers, Ryan Powers canned 14 points as Travis LeBlanc, Scott Runkle and Eric McCabe played well.

Knicks 38, Huskies 37 – Dan White popped in 12 points and Tom Anderau added six to lead the Knicks to the win. Jimmy Russo, John Johnson and Mike Fitzsimmons played well. For the Huskies, Tom Coscia scored 19 points while Kyle Wilcox and Chad Magoulas had fine floor games.

Nighthawks 34, Mavericks 23 – Henry Helgren scored 10 points and Kyle Harrington dragged down 12 rebounds as the Nighthawks rolled. Dillon Kelley added five steals. For the Mavs, Tom Capozziello scored 11 points, Dan Sclafani dished off eight assists and Peter Ovendorf made six steals.

Wildcats 26, Eagles 18 – Pat Sullivan scored nine points as the Wildcats trimmed the Eagles. Max Brazo, Kevin Dill and Kevin Dennis all played well. For the Eagles, Mike Zaccaro and Oliver Powers combined for 15 points while Powers also grabbed 12 boards. Ben Stoller made five steals.

Celtics 28, Regulators 20 – Kyle McCarthy and Mike Lengel combined for 18 points to lift the Celtics. Caleb Benore and Christian Sayegh had strong efforts. For the Regulators, Griffin Paynter canned eight points while Mike Ruddy and Nick Dinelli played well.

Hawkeyes 34, Trailblazers 22 – Robert Mascher scored eight points and Colin Cooper dished off seven assists to lead the Hawkeyes to the win. Connor Blanc played well. For the Blazers, Will Northrup canned nine points while Scott Wexler, Brendan McNamara and Francis Afriyar had solid games.

Celtics 39, Trailblazers 12 – Ryan Korth popped in 14 points to lead the Celtics to the win. Mike Lengel had a solid floor game. For the Blazers, Scott Wexler scored six points as Mike LoBosco and Logan Mammen played well.

Vikings 34, Huskies 28 – Kevin Phillips scored eight points and George Primavera grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Vikings to the win. Thomas DiLuoffo and Thomas Murphy played well. For the Huskies, Tom Coscia dropped in 13 points as Chad Magoulas, Jack McManus and Kyle Wilcox had solid floor games.

Hawkeyes 35, Knicks 28 – Colin Cooper scored 12 points and Bob Mascher dragged down 12 rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes to the win. Tom Stewart played well. For the Knicks, Dan White and John Johnson tossed in eight points apiece.

Mavericks 43, Vikings 42 – Thomas Capozziello scored 12 points … and two of those came at the buzzer to lead the Mavs to the win. Yanni Koutmos and Peter Kerns played well. For the Vikings, Thomas Murphy had 10 points while Kevin Phillips and Alec Saviano combined for 16 more. Austin Ekstrom, Richard Sandler and James Rebman (eight rebounds) played well.

Midget Boys

Nighthawks versus Huskies – Connor Quinn, Chase Wurtz, Miles LoBuglio and Colin Moller played well for the Nighthawks as Dave Cartisan, Matt Hoyt, Evan Swain and Kaleb Rowe powered the Huskies.

Tigers versus Blue Devils – Jake Feinstein, Drew Tarantino, Owen Gaston and Dan Gustafson played well for the Tigers as Dunkin Devin DiNicola, Shootin’ Sam Elliott, Scott ‘The Eraser’ Schmidt and Prince Nehar Patel anchored the Blue Devils.

Red Bombers versus Pistons – David Makuch, Daniel Winn, Eric Pisani and Tom Floros had strong efforts for the Bombers as Reid Schmidt, David Gerics, Scott Kelley and Jack Kearney played well for the Pistons.

Celtics versus Squarepants – Ryan Errico, Josh Villa, Tommy Gleason and Ryan Palmer played well for the Celtics as Tomas Nazer, Alex Strzelecki, Kyle Morrissey and Stefan Dullinger had strong games for the ‘Pants.

Raptors versus Huskies – Dan Hebert, Alex LeCrou, Harrison Buzzi and Jonah Muniz played well for the Raptors while Joe Davis, Eric Fiore and Colton Sposta anchored the Huskies’ effort.

Golden Eagles versus Grizzlies – Nicholas Cagganello, Bubba LeBlanc, Eric Song and Logan Puleri had strong floor games for the Eagles while Brendan Peterson, Patrick Mullin, Justin DeVellis and Patrick Afriyie played well for the Grizzlies.

Blue Lightning versus Orange Crush – Matt Spencer, Nick Sajovic, Wyatt Depuy and Pieter Martino played well for the Lightning as Tommy Cassin, Chris George, Chris Erikson and Matt Villamanna played well for the Crush.

Challengers versus Newtown Celtics – Tom Bauer, Brandon Marks, Ian Melvin and Richard Hoffman powered the Challengers while Patrick Thornberg, Alex Roche and Alex Lapinski anchored the Celtics.
