Danbury Hospital’s Ana Bahia: Coordinating Breast Care, One Patient At A Time

DANBURY — Any woman who has been contacted about an abnormal mammogram knows the panic that is associated with that phone call. Even though 80 percent of the abnormalities are not breast cancer, most women cannot help but think they are in the unfortunate minority who will receive a devastating diagnosis.

Enter Ana Bahia. As Danbury Hospital’s breast care coordinator, her role is not only to ensure peace of mind, but also to facilitate prompt and coordinated breast care. A true patient advocate, she is the person a woman hears from when there is a problem with a mammogram and follow up is needed. Using the utmost sensitivity, she explains the need for another test, and reassures patients with her calming demeanor.

“A lot of women are frightened when they learn they have to come back for another mammogram,” said Ms Bahia. “As a result, they want to have the second test done quickly. It’s my job to make sure that happens within 48 hours — or sooner if the patient is especially anxious. If a biopsy is needed, I also help coordinate surgical services. Ultimately, I try to help women understand the process and what they can expect each step of the way.”

Ms Bahia estimates that last year she assisted about 1,000 patients who needed additional testing through our facility. During that period, more than 240 women in the local community were diagnosed with breast cancer at Danbury Hospital. When asked how she keeps a positive attitude, Ms Bahia says: “I look at how many people we save. Danbury Hospital has a lot to offer patients. Our doctors and technicians provide excellent care.”

It is Ms Bahia’s drive and ability to navigate the system — from primary care physicians to radiologists to surgeons — that have earned her praise and heartfelt thanks among patients and physicians.

“A woman called me recently, frantic to get an appointment with a surgeon sooner rather than later,” recalled Ms Bahia. “I knew she was very anxious so I made calls to her physicians to see what we could do. It’s my job to expedite the process for patients in any way I can. I work closely with staff in the offices to meet these needs. The program works because of the group effort of all involved. She was very grateful and I was happy I was able to help.”

Ana Bahia is especially helpful to the area’s Portuguese/Brazilian population. A native of Portugal, she speaks Portuguese, and is often called upon by physicians to help translate for patients who do not understand English. In addition, she works closely with other staff in the Praxair Cancer Center and the Women’s Health Center to educate the Portuguese community about the importance of self-exams and regular checkups.

Dr Anna Mah, a radiologist, has high praise for Ana Bahia’s work. She sees the benefits of her role not only for patients, but for doctors, as well.

“Before Danbury Hospital established the breast care coordinator role, the referring physicians were responsible for calling patients back for a second test. Now, it’s done in a very consistent and uniform way, ensuring that no one falls through the cracks. In addition, if a patient has a problem, they know whom to call. Ana is very good with patients. She can take the time to explain the process and put it into perspective. Having someone like her is great.”

To contact Ana Bahia, call the Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital at 797-7714. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm. Leave a message if calling after hours. Calls are returned within 24 business hours.
