Another Exciting Pack 470 Pinewood Derby

Head O’ Meadow Cub Scout Pack 470 held the 2005 edition of its annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday, February 5. In all, more than 300 children of all ages, including excited parents, packed into the Head O’ Meadow cafetorium to enjoy watching, cheering, and helping the nearly 100 enthusiastic boys race their home-built model cars, rockets, and sailboats in a series of competitions.

The day began with a pancake breakfast and moved first to the Raingutter Regatta, an event where first-grader Tiger Cubs raced their wind-driven boats along a 25-foot watercourse. Next up were the second-grade Wolf Cubs, racing their rubber-band propelled rockets in an exciting Space Derby, followed by the third-grade Bear Cubs, making their first Pinewood Derby Car runs in the Rookie Division car races.

Then, the fourth and fifth-grade Webelos Scouts (Webelos stands for “We’ll Be Loyal Scouts”) ran their expertly crafted Pinewood Derby cars through the most hotly contested derby in recent memory.

In the end, car 36 by Robert Nordman took the Veteran’s Division championship but, not before three dead-heat runs versus the 62 “T-Bone” car of Thomas Primavera.

Award winners in the 2005 Raingutter Regatta were Timothy Pritchett, Nicholas Bourgeois, Gregory Fotinopoulos, Felix Summ, Christopher Buckley, and Evan Londono-Ayr. In the Space Derby, trophies went to Carter Nordman, Keaton McCleary, Patrick Olah, Edward Lajoie, Alexander Klang, and Matthew Hess. In the Pinewood Rookie Car Division, awards went to David Vallerie, Shay DeMarche, Sam Coffey, Matthew Villamana, Jack Lago, and Jonathan Schwartz.

And finally, in the spine-tingling Pinewood Veterans Car Division event, trophies went to Robert Nordman, Thomas Primavera, Kevin Schloff, Zachary Klang, Joe Davis, Stephen Rahr, Skyler Bast, and Scott Schmidt.
