‘No-Kill’ Says It All

To the Editor:

For over a decade the Newtown Animal Shelter has been overseen by the selectmen and has been a no-kill shelter. Before this, the animal shelter was overseen by the dog warden and assistant dog warden reporting to the Police Commission and animals were often euthanized for causes that would be unacceptable today.

One has to wonder why the current elected officials see a need for an ordinance and policy on euthanasia when we are a no-kill town. Why are the selectmen looking into returning the supervision of the animal shelter to the Police Commission? And, why does the Police Commission want to return to the scene of the crime?

Newtown residents and the shelter animals would be best served if the elected officials left this one alone.
