Room To Move

To the Editor:

I have only been a member of the Newtown Senior Center for two years. During this short time, I have seen substantial growth in the numbers attending the very popular exercise class led by MaryAnn Phillips; the age of participants ranging from 60 to 90+. This class involves weight training for strength and flexibility, cardiovascular workouts for heart health, and resistance workouts for muscle tone.

The popularity of this class has led to a significant lack of space, both inside the building and outside in the parking area. Unfortunately, seniors are being turned away as we are too many for the room to accommodate. This facility is not only used for exercise, but also for craft classes, a lunch program, and other activities which may run simultaneously; don’t forget the daycare center which shares the parking area.

The active senior population in Newtown continues to grow (currently about 5,500 members) and we certainly need more space and additional programs and services. Seniors are a valuable resource and I believe that “if you build it they will come.” Many more seniors will attend the center when the overcrowding situation is remedied.
