Grades 5-6

Hip Hoopsters 30, Raymond James Financial/The Shock 14: First quarter seemed a pretty even match; however, the Hip Hoopsters dominated the boards in second and third quarters. Top scorer was Cathy Hyeon with 9 points. Natalie Kelchner had 5 points and Grace Corcoran, Madison Findley and Elizabeth Weisgerber tied with 4 points each. The Shock’s top scorer was Lexy Leidlein with 6 points; Veronica Vodola, Abigail Pearson, Rebecca Gavel, and Julia Anderson all had 2 points each.

Inspirations For Your Home, LLC/Mean Green Fighting Machine 34, Tasmanian Devils 19: The first quarter ended with the Tassies on top by one point, but they could not keep the lead even with the help of their top scorer of the day, Ava Petrellese (10 points). Jaclyn Moccio (5 points) and Christina Sgobbo (4 points) completed the balance of the Tassies scoreboard. Mean Green Fighting Machine exploded in the second quarter and never looked back, scoring an impressive 10 point in each of the next three quarters. The amazing trio of Samantha Bicho, Sara Lindell, and Ally Tolson all had outstanding performances. Sam Bicho and Sara Lindell read their opponent and made the steals for 11 turnovers in the game. Ally brought her “A” game.

Shooting Stars 28, Space Narwhals 10: Shooting Stars brought home a victory against the Space Narwhals. Greta Staubly (10 points) and Lauryn Ackers dominated under the boards on both offense and defense. The aggressive play of Allie Eurell and Brianna Lovely led to several turnovers. Catherine Shaw, Charlie Condon (8 points), and Sarah Widman led the offense with help from Larkin Huffman and Beth Savinelli.

The Space Narwhals were down on their luck this week, missing some players and scoring only 10 points. Narwhals kept up with the Shooting Stars in the first half but could not hold in the third quarter.

Monstrosity 25, Della Schmid Chiropractic Centre/Sunburst 15: Sunburst held it close for three quarters before Monstrosity opened up the lead at the end. Top scorer was Carly Swierbut with 7 points. Cailin Wilson, Katie McCabe, and Danielle Otero scored 4 points each. Anna Cartelli, Jenna Carvalho, and Katie Bassett scored 2 points each. Caitlyn Child, Carvalho, McCabe, and Otero worked hard on defense, with several blocked shots and rebounds. Highlight of the game was when Otero pulled back from an open shot to feed teammate Katie Basset for her first score of the season. Basset showed her team that she could shoot as she took “nothing but net” from outside.

Sunburst always play with passion and energy. The Sunburst offense was led by Jaclyn O’Leary with 6 points and Jaclyn Gouveia with 4. Emma Schmid-Tharnish, Madeline Brock, and Rachel O’Grady also contributed baskets. Kendra Saunders led the defensive and rebounding effort for the energetic Sunburst.

Grade 5

Newtown 26, Norwalk 17: In the long-awaited rematch to avenge Newtown’s only league loss of the season, Newtown hustled and fought every minute against a physical Norwalk squad. Jackie Matthews, Kristen Cirone, and Alison Kelleher kept their composure at the foul line and each went 2-for-2, which would prove to be a critical factor in the game. Annika Brady also chipped in 2 points at the line and crashed the boards with authority. Jenna Lavelle led all scorers with 8 points. Nicki DaPra was fierce on defense. Tied 11-11 at the half, and still tight at 16-13 after three periods, Newtown broke away in the fourth quarter outscoring their opponents 10-4.

Monroe 25, Newtown 23: In a game where nothing seemed to go Newtown’s way, Tess Davenport drove hard to the basket and led all scorers with a season high of 8 points. Additional scoring was evenly balanced with Annika Brady, Kristen Cirone, and Lauren Adams each contributing 4 points, and Jenna Lavelle rounding it out with 3. Kim Buttery and Carolina Stubbs played strong defensively and on the glass. Tied with one minute to go, Newtown fought hard but could not break Monroe’s press. Monroe scored in the final seconds to secure the win.

Grade 6

Newtown 54, Norwalk 26: Newtown relied on a balanced scoring effort against a Norwalk team that made a lot of its outside shots. Newtown’s Rylee Mulligan, Kira Smith, and Sarah Houle led the way with 8 points apiece, while Julia Haskins, Marcella Daily, and Erin Burns each chipped in 6. Ashley Santore added 7 and Lauren Carrino scored 5 for the win.

Newtown 30, Darien 23: In a close game for first place in the league, Newtown came out on top behind the play of Marcella Daily, who scored 9 points, and Erin Burns, who had 8. Sarah Houle added 6 points, while Julia Doyle and Lauren Carrino scored 3 and 2 points, respectively. Carrino was active defensively as well, forcing several key turnovers, while Rylee Mulligan controlled the game from the point.

Grade 3

St Teresa’s 18, Mavs 16: Triple OT sudden death: What a game! Three OTs that ended in a first basket sudden death in the third OT. A tough way for a great game to end. The Mavs played this team much better than their early season contest, which they lost by 33 points. This time the young Mavs had a chance to reverse their fortunes. Luke Hannan and Karl Miller had 4 points, while CJ Demers, Stephen Cotton, and Nick Fischer each had a bucket. Trevor Barrett and Neil Kalra also had a free throw each. So, a well-balanced effort proving the Mavs moved the ball around. CJ Demers had six rebounds and Nick Fischer added four boards. Luke Hannan’s defense on #3, who was held to two points after scoring 15 points in their first meeting, was what made this the game of the year for this team. It was a great college atmosphere with kids from four other teams all cheering and standing courtside.

Amity 21, Mavs 19: Ok, so if losing one heartbreaker wasn’t enough, the final seconds saw the Mavs lose another single-basket game about 24 hours later. The Mavs showed great spunk on Sunday, led by Neil Kalra’s 6 points, Luke Hannan, 6 points, CJ Demers, 5 points and Trevor Barrett, 2 points. Luke Hannan had five rebounds, CJ Demers and Michael Haddick had three a piece. Neil Kalra’s energy and ability to get to the rim was his best game to date, the team fed off his effort. The difference in the game was on the glass getting bested by 14 by their bigger foes.

Grade 4

Blue Mavs 20, Easton 18: The Blue Mavs came back from 2 down at the half to beat Easton 20-18 on February 9 at the Newtown Youth Academy. Nick Kalra and Josh Taylor connected for 6 points each, while Liam Murphy and Joey Rios tossed in 4 apiece to lead the offense. Kalra, Rios, and Taylor were strong on the boards, combining for 19 rebounds. Kieran Coffey, Zak Droukas, Drew Mitchell, and Dillon Robinson smothered the Easton offense, disrupting plays and forcing crucial turnovers throughout the game.

White Mavs 34, New Fairfield 10: The White Mavs turned in their best defensive effort of the year and cruised to a 34-10 win over New Fairfield on Saturday at the Newtown Youth Academy. Jack Mulligan and Kyle Good combined for 17 points and 14 rebounds. Jack Lydon and Jack Kuligowski played intense defense and combined for 9 points. Sam Eppers and Kyle Sullivan led the offense from the point, while Charlie Eppers chipped in with 4 big baskets.

 Blue Mavs 38, St Theresa (Third Grade) 9: Keenan Murphy and Joey Rios led the Blue Mavs offense with 8 points each in the 38-9 win against the St Teresa third grade squad on Saturday at the Newtown Youth Academy. Kieran Coffey, Nick Kalra and Dillon Robinson added to the Blue Mavs lead, while Zak Droukas and Drew Mitchell played tough at the point and Josh Taylor was strong on the boards.

 New Canaan 29, Blue Mavs 26: The Blue Mavs lost a 29-26 heartbreaker to New Canaan on Sunday in Milford. After being down 2 at the half, the Blue Mavs battled back in the third quarter to tie the game twice — first with a Joey Rios layup and again with a Nick Kalra jumper. Then, Keenan Murphy connected to give the Blue Mavs a 19-18 lead going into the fourth quarter. New Canaan reclaimed the lead quickly, but the Blue Mavs battled back with Josh Taylor connecting to tie the game two more times. In the end, New Canaan’s strong foul shooting gave them the edge through the final two minutes to claim the win. Taylor had 9 points overall, Murphy had 8, Kalra had 5, and Liam Murphy added 2. Dillon Robinson, Zak Droukas, and Kieran Coffey were relentless in their pressure on the New Canaan offense, helping to disrupt passing plays and prevent the team’s guards from scoring.

White Mavs 22, Orange 8: The White Mavs came away with a 22-8 victory over the team from Orange on Sunday in Milford. Solid team defense held the Orange to zero points half way through the second quarter, while Kyle Sullivan led the offense with 8 points. Jack Mulligan and Kyle Good combined for 20 rebounds, while Jack Lydon and Jack Kuligowski were all over the floor. Max Wrage and Charlie Eppers had solid overall games, while Sam Eppers and Patrick Oberstadt had key rebounds.

White Mavs 37, Blue Mavs 31:The White Mavs came back from being down 6 at the half to beat the Blue Mavs 37-31 on Monday at the Newtown Youth Academy. Kyle Sullivan kept his hot hand from the outside with 12 points for the White Mavs. Jack Mulligan, Jack Lydon and Kyle Good combined for 12 points. Sammy and Charlie Eppers played solid defense and Patrick Oberstadt and Max Wrage got some key rebounds down the stretch. Jack Kuligowski played all 40 minutes and led the White Mavs with solid play at the point. Nick Kalra led the Blue Mav offense with 12 points. Zak Droukas, Joey Rios, and Josh Taylor added 4 points each, Drew Mitchell and Dillon Robinson chipped in for 2 each, and Keenan Murphy connected for 3 from the foul line. Murphy snatched 8 rebounds, while Kieran Coffey and Liam Murphy played solid defense.

 

5th Grade

Newtown 41, Danbury 37: Newtown started out of the gate very slowly against an undefeated Danbury squad and trailed 11-3 at the end of the first quarter. Danbury extended its lead to as many as 11 and entered the final quarter with a solid 28-21 lead. Momentum totally shifted in favor of Newtown in the final quarter, and the home team took its first lead at 31-30 with less than 5 minutes to play. Newtown stretched its lead to 7 before Danbury came roaring back to tie the score at 37. Newtown scored the final 4 points of the game, with Dan Mason scoring on an inbounds play, and Luke Melillo sealing the victory with 2 clutch free throws down the stretch. Newtown was led offensively by Robert Disibio and Luke Barrett. Disibio poured in 24 points, while Barrett chipped in with 9. Solid contributions at both ends of the floor were also received from Jimmy Davies, James Doyle, Todd Petersen, and Bryan Vander Have.

Newtown 43, Wilton 40: Newtown jumped out early on Wilton and controlled the game from the opening tip. Robert Disibio and Luke Barrett tossed in 8 each in the first half and gave Newtown a 23-19 lead at the break. Newtown extended its lead to 6 heading into the fourth quarter and held on for a 43-40 victory. Disibio and Barrett finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Todd Petersen and Luke Melillo chipped in with 4 each. Solid offensive and defensive efforts were also received from Griffin Cross, Jimmy Davies, James Doyle, Dan Mason, Aidan Moulder, and Bryan Vander Have.

Fairfield Knicks 31, Newtown Gold Rush 25: Cameron Trivers led Gold Rush with 7 points and pulled down multiple offensive and defensive rebounds. James Clifford (5 points), Shane Demers (4), and Eric Moore (3) directed the Gold Rush attack and played strong. Reed Hammond, Danny Schreiber, and Brennan Mayer chipped in 2 points each. John Albanesi, Shea Talbot, and Riley McCafferty played strong defense and kept the pressure on with numerous rebounds and multiple assists.

Newtown Gold Rush 42, Newtown Mavericks 17: Eric Moore led the Gold Rush with 9 points, followed by Reed Hammond who had 7 points. Shane Demers and Cameron Trivers each had 6 points. Shea Talbot (5), John Albanesi (4), James Clifford (3), and Brennan Mayer (2) combined for an additional 14 points. Riley McCafferty and Danny Schreiber played strong both offensively and defensively.

Trumbull 35, Newtown Gold Rush 17: The Gold Rush lost a tough game to Trumbull. Eric Moore led Gold Rush with 6 points, followed by John Albanesi with 5 points. Brennan Mayer and Cameron Trivers each chipped in 2 points, while Shane Demers and James Clifford added 1 point each to the total. Reed Hammond, Shea Talbot, and Riley McCafferty played strong defense and kept the pressure on with numerous rebounds and multiple assists.

Newtown Gold Rush 33, Brookfield 24: The Gold Rush played a great game with strong efforts on the offensive and defensive fronts. Eric Moore led the Gold Rush with 10 points, followed by John Albanesi who had 9. Shane Demers played strong with 6 points and Brennan Mayer and Shea Talbot each chipped in 4. Riley McCafferty, James Clifford, Danny Schreiber, Cameron Trivers, and Reed Hammond kept the pressure on with numerous rebounds and multiple assists.

Newtown Gold Rush 44, REBA 17: Despite having no substitutes, the Gold Rush played hard from tip off to the final whistle. Brennan Mayer, Cameron Trivers, Shea Talbot, and John Albanesi each had 10 points. Reed Hammond played strong both offensively and defensively and contributed 4 points.

Brookfield 35, Mavericks 33: Oh so close. The Maverick boys played their finest game of the season. Running their set offense, rebounding as a team and sheer all-around effort. Tucker Garrity scored 12 points, had 9 rebounds to lead the Mavs, while Jack Hannan had 7 points and 5 boards and 2 steals. Ben Futterman, Garrett Norberg, Harry Lucas, Ryan Burns, Gavin Connors, and Derrick Lewis all chipped in on offense, as well. Garrett Norberg continued his rebounding prowess by grabbing another seven rebounds as his aggressive play has been contagious of late.

Fairfield Knicks 36, Mavericks 18: Different game same outcome, the Knicks bested the Mavs by 18 for the second time in two weeks. The Mavs started slowly on Sunday afternoon, but played their high powered foes tough in the second half only getting outscored by 3. The team scoring was evenly distributed. Tucker Garrity had 4, Garrett Norberg 4, Ben Futterman 3, Jack Hannan, Harry Lucas, Derrick Lewis and Thomas Luciano all chipped in, too. Tucker Garrity had 6 rebounds and Garrett Norberg 4, while Ben Futterman led the second half efforts and ended with 5 steals.

Grade 6

Newtown 56, Wilton 53: Newtown came out strong, leaving a self-assured Wilton to play catch-up and chasing after Ryan Kost, Nick Weiland and Ryan Escoda’s fast hands and faster feet. Big men Erwin Grewal, Kyle Roche, and Jake Pirone were mammoth under the boards, with Silas Decker and Adam Bergeron fierce in the paint. Liam Deakin and Evan Eggleston’s press kept Wilton panicking, with Newtown ahead by 8 with only seconds left. A Wilton 3-pointer and 2 free throws brought the score within three at the buzzer, but Newtown came away with the win.

Thunder 41, Sox 40: The game came down to the last 55 seconds when Matthew Sadowski scored the winning basket with a clutch shot. The Thunder then played strong defense, preventing the Sox from making one final basket. Matthew Sadowski led all scorers with 14 points. Other scorers were Kai Toomey (11), Eugene Citrano (7), Alex Janiak (5), Kenny Malin (2), and Jack Buchler (2).

On the rebounding front, Alex Janiak led the Thunder with 7 boards, followed by Matthew Sadowski (6), Kai Toomey (3), EJ Santayana (2), Adam Farley (1), Eugene Citrano (1). The Thunder had 13 steals; Eugene Citrano (4), Adam Farley (3), Alex Janiak (2), and Kenny Malin, EJ Santayana, Matthew Sadowski, and Jack Buchler with 1 steal each. Kevin Reiss and Jack Carello played strong defense and set key picks to allow their teammates to score. Dylan Sock and David Kohler led the scoring for the Sox with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The team shot 63 percent from the charity stripe going 14 for 22. AJ Salaris and Christian Lestic played well on both ends of the court for the Sox.

 Monstars 24, AdvisorTrust.com Doughnuts 18: Josh Dunn led the Monstars with 11 points. Andrew Buzzi and Christian Adam led the team on defense and rebounding. Anthony Isabella also chipped in on the defensive side of the ball. Aidan Ford and The AdvisorsTrust.com Doughnuts made a comeback in the second half, bringing the score to a tie-game. Mark Hall played a strong game — and led the offensive. Josh Harper showed great defensive moves and placed a lot of pressure down court. Danny Grosso demonstrated great performance on both sides of the court. Aidan Ford had a good perimeter game, making a few sideline shots and showed his tenacity throughout. Nick Harper also had exhibited solid defense and crisp passing.

Invaders 40, Swishers 38: In a game that came down to the last shot, the Invaders defeated the Swishers 40-38. Ethan Aug recorded a triple, leading all scorers with 10 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds, including a clutch layup in the waning seconds of the game. The threesome of Jack Miller (8 points) and Jackson Dooley (4) and Michael Arthur (5 assists) kept the game close for the Invaders. Tylor Gaynor, Colin Kelly, Ian Klipacki, and Dino Vogiatzis played well, pulling down several rebounds.

Every Swisher scored, with Timmy Shaw netting 8 points and Grant Moxham leading the way with 10 points. A second half defensive surge was led by Ryan Mailloux, John Payne, Connor Dinallo, and Jack Oltran. Wyatt Moyers also played outstanding with 4 points and 10 rebounds.

Grade 7

Newtown Mavericks 58, Seymour Blue 37: Newtown Mavs guards Mike Liberante (4 points), Will Huegi (2 points) and Tommy Kitzmiller (6 points) were the Men of Steal in the win against Seymour in FCBL action on Saturday. Point guard Austin Engler distributed the rock for two assists and four points and forwards Andrew Lee (12 points) and Gavin Stubbs (15 points) were efficient inside and beyond the arc, as the Mavs scored their high mark this season in the most complete team win yet.

 Newtown Mavericks 45, Southbury 36: After Southbury took an early 9-2 lead, the Mavericks adjusted their defense to contain the Southbury center, and went on an 8-0 run of their own. Through three quarters the teams played evenly, but Newtown finished with a flurry, pressing nonstop, and outscored their rival 14-7 in the final period to avenge a loss earlier this season. Jason Hebner was physical and aggressive pulling down 5 boards and Brian Flood (2 points) played inspired ball in the paint. Sammy Grossano manned the point fearlessly with 3 assists and led all scorers with 15. Andrew Lee and Gavin Stubbs each had 10 points and Connery Mayer (8 points) was money from the field and the stripe in the second half.

Fairfield 60, Newtown 41,: Newtown lost a tough battle for first place against Fairfield, who has only had one loss this season. Fairfield led in the first half by more than 20 points. Newtown mounted a strong comeback that started with some aggressive defense led by Connor Barrett, who had a season high 5 steals. Hayes Kelchner contributed 19 points, while Bobby Haskins and Ben Mason kicked in 7 and 6 points, respectively.

 Newtown 49, Ridgefield 20: Newtown took a 15-0 lead against Ridgefield and never looked back. Hayes Kelchner again dominated down low with 18 points and 12 rebounds. His near dunk in the second period brought many wide eyes in the stands. Jack Moulder brought his hot hand with 10 points and two long 3-pointers. Jack Lavelle was tough on the boards as usual with 6 rebounds and 4 points. Bobby Haskins added 9 points and Justin Dunn 4.

Grade 8

Newtown 60, Trumbull 55: With the game tied at 42 after three quarters, Newtown was able to pull away in the fourth for its sixth straight victory. Ethan Carpenter (8 for 9 from the foul line) led the way with 16 points, while Dillon Palumbo was hot down the stretch, scoring 9 of his 13 points in the final quarter. Mason Melillo scored 11, Geoff Santore 5, and Matt Maturo 4.

Westport 64, Newton 52,: An athletic Westport squad avenged a mid-January loss to Newtown. Ryan Shaw had a strong performance inside, scoring 15 points. Carpenter and Palumbo added 10 apiece. Jamie Cochrane ran the offense from the point and scored 5, while Nick Samuelson (2 points) and Andrew Svanda were dominant on the boards.

New Haven 77, Newtown 63,: Newtown fell behind early and could not find a way to prevent New Haven from getting to the rim. James Frazzetta scored a season high 13, with Santore and Matt Gerics each scoring 8. Maturo and Svanda added 5 points apiece.

Ridgefield 71, Newtown 65: Down by 16 entering the fourth quarter, Newtown roared back to get within 4 with two minutes remaining, but could get no closer as Ridgefield hung on for the victory. Shaw had an impressive game with 23 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Melillo heated up in the second half, scoring 15, pulling down 9 boards, and dishing 6 assists. Palumbo added 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Carpenter (3 steals) had 7 points, while Cochrane (5 assists) had 4 points.
