Help From Friends

To the Editor:

Breast cancer, the diagnosis, the treatment and the outcome, these words comes with countless implications in the life of a woman. Facing the facts is an overwhelming obstacle. Recently I came to the realization that I was one of those women in this day-to-day fight for survival. As the single mother of a young son I knew this battle would be difficult and lonely. Little did I know that my greatest inspiration would come from the most unlikely place. This is not a letter about the struggles of this disease. This is a letter of profound thanks to family and friends.

The family and friends that I am referring to are found in Newtown at Robert Anthony’s Salon. The salon is family-owned and operated. I am sure there are many patrons who are aware of their expertise with style, cut, and color. But I am writing to describe a quality not found in many of the other fast pace, impersonal, and expensive salons we frequent.

Being newly diagnosed, part of my treatment includes an intense regimen of chemotherapy. This meant losing my hair, which has been one of my defining features since I can remember. Upon facing this dilemma I made an appointment with Diana because I needed advice on how to handle this situation. My experience was both motivational and uplifting. The staff was kind and caring in their patience and approach. I left the salon with a fabulous short cut so when my hair did fall out it would not be so devastating. Three weeks later, upon losing my hair I returned for styling update tips for my new wig. As before, when I left I was thrilled with my “new hair” and also received tips for keeping my scalp conditioned and ready for new hair growth once chemotherapy is completed.

I must say that without the personal and professional care that I found at Robert Anthony’s Salon my endurance would have dwindled. Now I am at peace with this obstacle and ready to complete my fight for the cure.

My profound thanks go out to all the staff and patrons who shared their love and comfort. We all hear that God works in mysterious ways. Well, one of his works was opened to me and I will forever be thankful for the beautiful way it has touched my life.

God Bless and Peace be with you all.
