Daphne Gibney, 66, wife of Brian Gibney of Sandy Hook, died on February 14 at Danbury Hospital.
Mrs Gibney was born in Greenford, England, on January 31, 1940, a daughter of George and Avril (Sinclair) Gibbs. A 37-year resident of Newtown, Mr and Mrs Gibney came to Connecticut in 1968 from England, where they had met at a bed and breakfast owned by the Gibbs family.
Mrs Gibney worked in the Newtown school system since 1979. She served as a teaching assistant and as a secretary at Newtown Middle School until 1998. She taught continuing education and directed the Summer Music and Arts Program.
Mrs Gibney was committed to community service and local volunteer work, including her involvement with the Cyrenius H. Booth Library Book Sale, Jaycee Wives, several PTAs, Newtown Orchestra Parents, 4-H Club, and the Fresh Air Fund.
In addition to her husband, Mrs Gibney is survived by her sons David of California and Jonathan and his wife, Janine, of Brookfield; and grandchildren, Blake and Jesse. Her sisters, Edwina and Stephanie of England, also survive Mrs Gibney.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, February 18, at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole). Mrs Gibneyâs friends and colleagues are invited to speak in tribute at the ceremony. Calling hours will be Friday, February 17, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Lillinonah Audubon, PO Box 791, Southbury CT 06488. The Gibney family also asks those wishing to honor Mrs Gibneyâs memory to consider donating a pint of blood to a local blood bank.
