2006 Battle Of The Books Is In The Works

Newtown students in grades 5 through 8 may register until Wednesday, March 1, to participate in the second annual Battle of the Books Trivia Contest at C.H. Booth Library. The contest will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, March 18. A snow date of Sunday, March 19, is scheduled.

To enter, students must form a team of three to five students. A complete packet of information about the contest is available at the library.

Team members will be responsible for reading and becoming experts on the following contest books: Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins, Hoot by Carl Hiaasen, Trouble Don’t Last by Shelley Pearsall, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling.

Participants must submit their own trivia questions on the four books by March 14. An optional practice round for the competition is scheduled for Tuesday, March 14.

The first place team will win tickets to see the movie Hoot, which opens in April. The second place team will win passes for skating at Danbury Ice Arena.

The winning team members’ names will also be inscribed on a plaque to be hung in the Young Adult Department of the library. Each member may select a book that the library will purchase and dedicate in his/her name.

Last year seven teams competed in the battle, testing their knowledge and enjoying the competitive contest.

Books and additional information are available in the library’s Young Adult area. Interested participants may also contact Young Adult Librarian Margaret Brown at 426-4533.
