The Newtown High School Nighthawks brought home four medals from the State Class LL Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at the New Haven Athletic Center.
The Newtown High School Nighthawks brought home four medals from the State Class LL Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at the New Haven Athletic Center.
Lauren Sudbey took third place in long jump at the State competition with a school record-breaking leap of 16 feet, 8.75 inches. The previous record of 16-6 inches was set by Laurie Miller in the State Open in 1999. Sudbey also won a sixth-place medal in pole vault with a vault of 9 feet which tied her own school record she set earlier this year.
Emily Korth also medaled in the high jump with a height of 4-10 to tie for sixth place.
On the boysâ side, Kevin Hoyt was the only one from Newtown to come away with a medal, earning his sixth-place finish in the boysâ 3200 meter event with a time of 9:44.16.
As a team, the Newtown girls placed 15th with 7.50 points (Glastonbury took first with 83) and the NHS boys were 21st with one point (Danbury won top honors with 116).
The following participants qualified for Saturdayâs State Opens: Sudbey in pole vault and long jump, Korth in pole vault, Keegan Frobey in high jump and Kevin Hoyt in the 3200 meters.
