St Rose Fish Fry Seasoned To Taste

James Barry and Michael Lucas sold tickets as quickly as they could pull them off the roll Friday night, February 8, at the St Rose Fish Fry. More than 30 residents stood in line and breathed in the aromas of deep fried filets and french fries only minutes after doors opened at 5 pm. As the first few people filled their plates and reached for a napkin, still more customers joined the crowd.

Firefighter Ray Corbo lifted up his 2-year-old son Joey for a better look at dinner selections, while ahead of them parishioner Debbie Pepe looked for a seat. Making sure they had enough ketchup and spare silverware were Angela and Doug Carriero.

Settling in their seats were brothers and sister Mary, Gabe, and John Locke. As the line grew and tables filled, server Joe Rahtelli reached for another filet, glad to see the line was “out the door” again this year. Announcing the “hot and fresh” dinners for those waiting to reach the serving trays, he anticipated as many as 600 people would pass through the hall that night. Chairing this year’s supper were John Barry, Ron Kopcik, and Brian Liotta.

Organizing the fish fry again this year were the Knights of Columbus members, who earned praise from Grand Knight John Moulder. He wrote in an e-mail, “Our 2008 Lenten Fish Fry dinners got off to a rousing start last night.  Thanks to exhaustive planning on the part of our three co-chairs, opening night was a huge success. It was great to see the esprit de corps among all those who participated.  I am always amazed at how many of our brothers turn out to support these dinners. Special mention for one of our newest members, Fr Milan, for serving the coleslaw nonstop all night.  He was an inspiration to us all.  Much appreciation for the cleanup crew who provided a welcome relief for those working the early shift. Wherever I traveled around town the reviews I heard were unanimous...The fish fry was excellent!”
