A Preposterous Assertion
A Preposterous Assertion
(The following letter to Ed Terry has been received for publication. Mr Terry wrote a letter entitled âThe Ladies Blew Itâ that was published in the February 8 edition of The Bee.)
Dear Mr Terry:
I am sorry you feel that the female voters of Newtown âblew their chanceâ to make a real change in this country. However, the assertion that women make their own glass ceilings is not only preposterous, but utterly inconsiderate of the fact that there are glass ceilings for women that would not be there if we were in control of their existence, I assure you.
The sad truth is that it is not the candidates alone that will make change because they must still operate within our society. It is this social institution that has systematically oppressed African Americans, the LGBTQ community, women, and numerous other groups of citizens. This condition will not change simply because we place a female in a position of leadership. The change will come from a fundamental shift in the attitudes of society and their tendency to blame those with the least amount of power.
