Openings Still Available For Discovery Science Workshop
The Discovery Science Workshops will take place Saturday, February 26 from 9:00 am to noon, at the Newtown High School.
This is the eighth year that volunteers from the community will bring 45-minute hands-on workshops to Newtownâs grammar school students and their parents. Two additional workshops are available for students in grades three through five. The first workshop is Forensic Exam, where students will learn fingerprint lifting and crime scene processing. The second workshop is How Computer Chips are Made, where students will learn how computer chips are made through video, discussion and hands-on participation. If you have not yet registered and would be interested in these exciting classes please call Karen Udiskey at 426-7027.
Students should check in through the high school cafeteria between 8:00 am and 8:45 am. The first workshop will begin promptly at 9:00 am. In the event of snow, tune in to 98Q (98.3 FM) for cancellation information. If the workshops are cancelled, the snow date will be March 4th.
At 11 am, Donald Rethke, a.k.a. âDr. Flush,â will present a program entitled âLife after lift-offâ in the high school auditorium. Everyone is invited to attend, even those persons who have not registered to attend the individual workshops.
This year the Discovery Science Workshops will also include a Scholastic Discovery Book Fair. The fair features non-fiction books, science kits and tools, educational toys and software. The general public is invited to the fair as well as workshop attendees. The Book Fair will be open from 8 am to 1 pm in the Newtown High School cafeteria, adjacent to the workshop registration. Cash, checks, and credit cards accepted. Come get some ideas for the Discovery Science Fair, which will be held in March. Proceeds from the book fair will go to the Newtown Junior Womenâs Club community projects.
The workshops are sponsored by NJWC and the Newtown Board of Education. Corporate sponsors are The Dock and Newtown Savings Bank.
