Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team went on the road and defeated Weston 56-27 on February 7, then traveled to Brookfield for a 66-30 victory on February 10. With the wins, the Nighthawks improved to 9-3 in South-West Conference play and are competing for one of the top four spots and a first-round South-West Conference Tournament home game.

In the win over Weston Sam Diaspro scored 22 points, Macey Arcario had eight points and seven rebounds, and Ava Rochester dished out seven assists.

Against Brookfield, Diaspro had 16 points and six rebounds, Ana Morris dropped in 13 points to go along with seven assists and four steals, Mo Murphy registered a dozen points, and Cassie Pickering added nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Nighthawks close out the regular slate at home against Bethel on Friday, February 14, at 6:45 pm; it is also Senior Night for the Hawks. Heading into the last game Notre Dame Prep (Fairfield) and Bethel both have ten wins and Newtown, Pomperaug of Southbury, and Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport each have nine victories. Newtown owns the tiebreaker on Kolbe having won head to head, but Pomperaug had the tiebreaker on Newtown. One of these strong teams will fall into the fifth-place position and have first-round road tilt.
