At 10:45 am on February 14, a correction was made to the floor exercise result.

Newtown High School's gymnasts put forth crisp routines in the balance beam, floor, vault, and bars in the South-West Conference championship meet, at New Milford High, on February 13.

When all was said and done, the Nighthawks were edged by the host Green Wave 132.500 to 131.750

Oxford, the team Newtown practices and travels to competitions with, was third with a score of 129.000, Pomperaug of Southbury came in fourth with 128.050.

"Even though we travel together, they're both very competitive," Chelsie Eckman said of the squads, both of which she coaches out of Kinetic Kids Gymnastics in Oxford. "They push each other."

The friendly competition goes beyond the Newtown-Oxford connection as evidenced by opponents applauding the efforts of their counterparts from rival schools.

"We're all just one big family and we're all here for each other," Newtown gymnast Sarah MacMullan said.

"All in all it's a lot of fun - it's very team oriented," Newtown's Maddie Jannott added.

Nonnewaug was fifth with 126.850, and Joel Barlow of Redding placed sixth with 120.150.

The Nighthawks were first on the floor with a team score of 33.200, second on each the balance beam (33.150) and bars (32.200), and fourth on the vault with a score of 33.200.

Newtown's Allyson Kenny was fourth in the all around with a score of 34.300, and Jannott and MacMullan placed seventh and eighth in the all around with scores of 33.100 and 32.950.

Kenny placed third on the bars with a score of 8.6.MacMullan and Olivia Brosnan came in eighth and ninth on the bars with scores of 7.8 and 7.7. Mary Locke tied for 12th with a 7.5.

On the balance beam, MacMullan was sixth with an 8.45 and Jannott tied for seventh with an 8.3. Kenny and Casey Sullivan tied for eighth with scores of 8.2.

Eckman was pleased with her team's effort across the board, but especially on the balance beam.

"That was the best beam routine I think I've seen all season," the coach said.

Kenny tied for first on the floor with a score of 9.0, Jannott tied for sixth with a score of 8.4, and MacMullan was seventh with an 8.3.

Eckman said her team members mixed some new tumbling passes into their floor routines.

Kenny came in fourth on the vault with an 8.5, MacMullan tied for fifth with a score of 8.4, and Jannott was sixth with an 8.3.
