FOR 2-22 MIKE KELLEY CUT FELT BANNERS AT 1018 ART

ak/lsb set 2/14 #728819

NEW YORK CITY — The exhibition “Banners,” featuring a selection of Mike Kelley’s collaged textile works created between 1985 and 1993, will be on view through April 26 at 1018 Art. This body of work includes large-scale pieces made of felt, a medium associated with infancy. The show incorporates Kelley’s engagement with exposed prejudices: repression, popular cultures, adolescence and sexuality, and transmits his working in a quasi-religious mystery.

All banners in the exhibition are large wall hangings made of glued and sewn felt, such as “Lincoln’s Beacon,” a wall hanging tribute to Abraham Lincoln. Kelley’s work contains symbolic references to American history and is highly political. In “Three-Point Program/Four Eyes,” Kelley uses black and white felt spots with slogans.

Kelley, born in Detroit in 1954, lives and works in Los Angles. He attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1976, BFA and received his MFA at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, in 1978. His work has been exhibited extensively in galleries, as well as in museums, including recent solo exhibitions at Musee du Louvre, Paris, in 2006; Tate Liverpool, Liverpool, England in 2004; and at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, in 2000.

The gallery 1018 Art is at 1018 Madison Avenue, third floor. For information, 212-537-0453 or www.1018art.net.
