Ted Martocchio Scholarship Established At CSU

The Connecticut State Building and Trades Union has established a university scholarship for graduating high school seniors attending a campus of the Connecticut State University System – Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, or Western Connecticut State University in Danbury. The new scholarship was established in memory of the late Theodore E. Martocchio, a thirty-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, who died in 1998 at the age of 54.

Two scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded in May 2000. Each year a different CSU campus will be the recipient of the scholarship. Students attending Central Connecticut State University in New Britain will be the first recipients.

To be eligible for selection, a student must be the child of a Connecticut State Building Trades Union member, have a minimum of a 3.0 Grade Point average, be a graduating senior who has been accepted to Central Connecticut State University for fall 2000, and be a resident of the state of Connecticut.

Scholarship applications are available through all high school guidance departments or by contacting the Connecticut State University System Foundation at 860/493-0020. The deadline for application materials to be received by Central’s admissions office is March 15. Contact Barbara Lukas in Central’s admissions office at 860/832-2292 for further information about the application.

Mr Martocchio was inducted into the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 35, in January 1967. He served as president of Local 35 from 1995 to 1998, treasurer of Local 35’s Political Action Committee from 1990 to 98, and was vice-president of the Connecticut State Building Trades Council from 1990 to 98, and a delegate to the convention.

Mr Martocchio coordinated Local 35’s legislative agenda with the Building Trades and ALF-CIO, working closely with lobbyists and Building Trades on trade union issues from 1985 to 1998. He was the founding director and chairman of the board of directors, Foundation for Fair Contracting of Connecticut.

Contributions to the Ted Martocchio Endowed Scholarship may be made payable to the Connecticut State University System Foundation and sent to 39 Woodland Street, Hartford, Connecticut, 06105 to the attention of Sally Tresselt. All contributions are tax deductible and gifts are eligible to be matched by the State of Connecticut.
