Defends Diversity

To the Editor:

We all understand that there has been a major assault on DEIA at the national level. The pain this is inflicting upon others is unimaginable and there are a majority of us working hard to stem this assault on the local level now. For if we don’t, many of our citizens will have to endure the pain this brings to them as it continues and quite possibly worsening as time passes. That which was once beginning, finally, to recede into the background is now coming out to the forefront full force. Our school children are being harassed unfairly by the students and adults. We cannot, we will not, we are obliged by our basic human decency to not allow this to happen here in Newtown. We are a diverse group of citizens who chose to live here in Newtown for the beauty of the landscape, the serenity of the lifestyle and, what we thought was going to be an acceptance of our individualities and backgrounds.

We need now to band together to protect our children from racism by teaching them the true history of our country. Those newly educated students will discover much to applaud from our diversity rather than working to pull each other down. We must save those who are now being subjected to the pain of uneducated others who would wish to bring them down. Newtown must remember the importance of upholding DEIA in our town, for it is by having each individual town hold true to the beauty of diversity that we, as a country, can overcome this heinous governmental act.

As we work toward keeping the principles of DEIA in our schools — no matter what the new government is trying to do — we can remain the Newtown that we all came here for. We can, will and should continue working together to enjoy our diversity rather than scandalize it.
