Passover

With A Purpose

DANBURY — Passover With A Purpose is a new project of the Greater Danbury Section of The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). This project will take up the challenge of ensuring that everyone in the greater Danbury Jewish community is able to celebrate this year’s Passover holiday nutritiously, ritually, and with pride of heritage.

During February and March, NCJW is reaching out to area organizations to collect kosher for Passover food baskets. NCJW will then gather the donated Passover foods and add seder staples (ritual wine, Haggadot, etc) which will enable recipients to have the foods they need to observe traditions including those needed during the family seder, a meal that includes a series of actions performed in a ritually prescribed order while retelling the inspirational story of the Isralites’ exodus from Egypt.

Passover, a celebration of freedom, begins this year at sundown on the evening of April 8 and lasts eight days.

For some, Passover can be a huge financial burden, and this is especially true in these challenging economic times. Special Kosher for Passover foods are traditionally eaten for the entire duration of the holiday. These foods are only available during the few weeks leading up to the holiday, only at this time of year, and are only considered kosher for that particular year.

For more information, or to make donations, contact NCJW at 746-1072 or GrDanburyNCJW@gmail.com.

For those who are or know of a Jewish family in need of assistance during this Passover holiday in the greater Danbury area community, Jewish Family Services can be contacted at 794-1818 or TheJFS@sbcglobal.net.

The National Council of Jewish Women is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
