Occupation: Iâm a full-time mom, but Iâm a part-time lots of things. Iâm a writer and a performance poet. Iâm also a host for the Wednesday Night Poetry Series at Molten Java in Bethel, and Iâm a master wildlife conservationist, which is a volunteer for the DEP. Iâve been working at the Shepaug Dam at the eagle observation site. Iâve done raptor surveys and all kinds of things.
Family: My husband, Will, and I have three kids. Sarah is 24 and living in San Francisco; Erica is 21 and at UMass Amherst; and our son Colin is 15 and at NHS.
Pets: We have three cats, Eclipse, Luna, and Mariposa.
How long have you lived in Newtown? Weâve been here in Sandy Hook for 17 years.
What do you like to do in your free time? Iâm usually adding on more things to do. I do like to read and take walks when I have some time, and I like to garden when itâs nicer out. Iâm looking forward to the warmer weather.
What are you reading now? I have a stack three feet tall that Iâm trying to read. I am rereading Choke by Chuck Palahniuk. Heâs one of my favorite authors. I have a whole mess of poetry books Iâm reading, too. One is by Robin Robertson, a Scottish poet. It was near the top of the pile.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? Our favorite place is in Maine. We have some property in Dixfield at the foothills of the western mountains, and hope to someday build a little place there. It kind of reminds us of Oregon, where we lived for three years.
What is the best thing about Newtown? Weâve made some really good friends here, and our kids have all grown up here. Both my husband and myself moved around a lot growing up, so itâs been neat to have our kids grow up in one place, to have a hometown.
If you could do one thing youâve never done, what would it be? I would travel a lot and visit a lot of different places. Iâd like to see all 50 states and see other countries, too.
Do you have a personal philosophy? Treat everybody how youâd like to be treated yourself. If everyone just did that, weâd probably have a lot less problems.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? Chocolate. I love dark chocolate, as dark as you can get it and not have it be unsweetened baking chocolate. And pastries, which I shouldnât have. Another one is just not doing anything; just sitting and enjoying what is around me, and I donât get very many chances to do that.
