Eighth-Graders Win YAC Tourney
Newtownâs eighth grade boysâ travel basketball team won the Yorktown Athletic Club Tournament this past weekend. Newtown played four games in two days, beating Scarsdale twice, Mahopac and LaGrange (in the championship game).
Newtown won each game by 15 points or more despite the absence of Pieter Martino who could not play because he was out with the flu. Due to other commitments, three of the players could not make the semifinal or final game, leaving Newtown with only six players for those contests. There was no stopping the Newtowners, however, behind contributes throughout the lineup during this tourney.
Gavin Scallon was the teamâs leading scorer, Reid Schmidt was the leading rebounder, Sean Elliott led the team in steals and had 2 blocked shots in the final game and Kevin LeBlanc and Danny Hebert were the assist leaders. Mike Daubert had a breakout game in the semifinal round with 13 points and Connor Quinn had 15 points in the first round game against Scarsdale. Nick Gerbo had three 3-pointers in the first two games and David Gerics chipped in with 6 points in the first game.
