The Newtown High School junior varsity girls' basketball team ran its record to 19-0 this week and - with one game remaining - was on the verge of completing its second undefeated season in the last three years.

With a 55-38 win over Bethel last Wednesday, a 48-15 win over Jonathan Law last Friday, and a 50-39 win over Lauralton Hall on Monday the jayvee Nighthawks put themselves just one game away (Foran, on Wednesday) from completing another unblemished season.
âThe girls are going so well,â said coach Cynthia Klebon. âI am so proud of them. One of our goals was to finished undefeated this year and we knew with a win over Lauralton Hall that we had a good chance of doing that.â
In the win over Bethel, Stephanie Logan had a monster effort with 23 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Erin Murdock added eight points while Shannon Kohn chipped in with seven points, four steals and five rebounds. Julie Iwanicki dished off four assists.
In the win over Law, Kelley Haines canned 16 points as Iwanicki had seven points, five rebounds and five steals. Julie Neitch had six points and Kohn had five. Monica Cluff pulled down four rebounds and Christine Manfredonia dished off three assists.
In the win over Lauralton Hall, Haines poured in 16 points (12 of those in the first half) and Iwanicki added 12 (all in the first half). Logan also hit for double figures with 11 points and added nine rebounds to boot. Kohn chipped in with seven points while Tori Filler had four points and seven rebounds. Haines also dragged down seven rebounds.
The âHawks were on their way Wednesday (after press time) to Foran to battle the Lions in their final game of the season.
