Record Broken As Track Teams Stand Out In South-West Conference Championships
Newtown High School’s indoor track teams stood out in the South-West Conference Championships, held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on February 4. The Nighthawk girls scored 83 points and were runner-up with Weston which had 87, and the NHS boys came in third with 71 points; Bethel was first with 119 and New Milford second with 89.
Riley Powers won the 1000 meter dash in a time of 3:04.67 and took first in the 600 in 1:43.43. Aashini Shetty was second in the 55 hurdles in 9.43, followed by third-place finisher Kayleigh Troy in 10.10.
The 1600 sprint medley relay of Ella Hall, Rachael Albrecht, Abby Ihlefeld, and Hannah Snayd came in first, clocking in at 4:36.56.
Newtown’s 4x800 relay of Keira Budge, Ryann Heim-Sherwood, Nadia Andrew, and Snayd was second in 10:28.19. The 4x400 relay of Ihlefeld, Grace Lyons, Troy, and Heim-Sherwood came in fourth in 4:34.97. The 4x200 relay of Hall, Albrecht, Lola Kessler, and Eva Barricelli placed fourth in 1:54.55.
The Newtown sprint medley relay team of Oliver Guzy, Aydyn Gonzalez, Caleb Smith, and Soheib Dissa was first in a school record-setting time of 3:46.49. The relay also qualified for the National Championships.
Dissa was first in two other events, winning the 1000 meter race in 2:34.65 and capturing the top spot in the 3200 with a time of 9:50.47. Smith won the high jump competition with a leap of 5-10 and was second in the 55 dash in 6.84. Kevin Murray won the 55 hurdles in 8.52 and was third in the shot-put with a throw of 44-7.75. Guzy was third in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.54.
