Hawks Shine In SWC Track Championships
NEW HAVEN — Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams had some stellar performances, including first-place results, at the February 8 South-West Conference championship meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center.
The girls placed second and the boys were fourth. There were numerous top-ten finishes by the Nighthawks.
In the 55-meter dash Elise Barricelli was first in a time of 7.57 seconds. Riley Powers won the 1600 in 5:20.17. Sarah Nowacki won the shot put event with a throw of 35-03.50; teammate Anna Burns was second with a 32-04.25.
The 4x800 relay team of Aidan Budge, Drew Poseno, Nick Jacobs, and Will Tainter-Gilbert was first in a time of 8:34.32.
Weston was first in both competitions. The NHS girls, with 89 points, lost to the Trojans by just 11 points, closing the gap after falling by 44 last winter. The boys also made strides, improving on last year’s seventh-place outcome.
“Overall an awesome meet, we are not disappointed in the results; we worked hard. We made some mistakes here and there but others picked up the slack. As a team we came in prepared and did the best we could. On to states and on to outdoor,” Coach Becky Knapp said.
Boys’ Coach Becky Osborne was also pleased with the overall results. “We went in with a positive, relaxed attitude, and everyone stepped up and did really well. I am very proud of this team and all of their hard work. I can’t wait to see what states and outdoors brings,” Osborne said.
