AVV 12-19 #681527
BALTIMORE, MD. â The Walters Art Museum will present âUntamed: The Art of Antoine-Louis Baryeâ February 18âMay 6. The exhibition is devoted to the works of Antoine-Louis Barye (1796â1875), the foremost animal sculptor of the Nineteenth Century.
âUntamedâ will include his well-known sculpture and his oil and watercolor paintings and sketches. Comprising 130 objects, the exhibition includes numerous bronzes, a variety of models in different media, watercolors and oil paintings drawn primarily from the Waltersâ extensive Barye collection.
These pieces will reveal the full range of Baryeâs subjects from animal combat scenes and equestrian statues to the human form. Featured in the Waltersâ holdings are casts such as the silver âWalking Lionâ commissioned by Napoleon III in 1863 and the five principal hunt groups from the duke of Orleansâs surtout de table (table centerpiece), which are regarded as one of the key monuments of French Romantic sculpture. Works created during Baryeâs formative years in the 1830s will be placed within the context of controversial and critical debate.
The Walters Art Museum is at 600 North Charles Street. For information, 410-547-9000, or www.thewalters.org.
