BILL SCOTT PAINTINGS, PRINTS AT HOLLIS TAGGART MARCH 1 w/1 cut

avv/gs set 2-12 #688166

NEW YORK CITY — “Bill Scott: Looking Through” will be on view March 1–31 at Hollis Taggart Galleries in the artist’s second exhibition here.

Comprised of more than 30 of his intricate, lush paintings and prints, this exhibition showcases his recent work and presents the two media together for the first time.

Scott’s complexly arranged abstractions adeptly combine geometry with calligraphic brush work. In “Tea and Oranges,” 2005, and “The Cat Outside,” 2006, for example, sinuous lines overlaid on patches of rich color weave together the different areas of pigment.

Bold palettes are a hallmark of his work; paintings such as “The Green Bottle, 2005, and “Birthday Dinners,” 2006, adeptly juxtapose oranges, reds, pinks and yellows to create luminous, sophisticated compositions. Prints, including “Landscape with Trees II,” 2006, and “A Broken Promise,” 2005, demonstrate the artist’s processes; their intricate and engaging arrangements recall the oils, but approach line, space, and color in a new way.

A lifelong Philadelphian, Scott studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and informally with Joan Mitchell. His newest work continues the colorist tradition of Philadelphia Modernism, of which he is a central enduring exponent. At the same time, his constant reevaluation of his working methods demonstrate what Berman has described as a “lively sense of discovery…one that draws fully on both the intellect and the emotions.” These vibrant, compelling compositions reflect and celebrate this exploration.

The gallery is at 958 Madison Avenue. For information, www.HollisTaggart.com or 212-628-4000.

ALBERT YORK PAINTINGS ON VIEW AT DAVIS & LANGDALE MARCH 3

avv/gs set 2-12 #688136

NEW YORK CITY — Davis & Langdale Company presents a loan exhibition, “Albert York: Paintings,” on view March 3–31.

The exhibition will consist of approximately 20 paintings, a number of which have not been seen for many years. Although York has produced no new painting since 1992, the gallery has attempted by these periodic exhibitions to make his work accessible to painters and the general public.

York was born in Detroit in 1928 and studied at the Ontario College of Art and at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit.

He has been exhibiting in New York for more than 40 years, beginning at Davis Galleries (later Davis & Long Company, now Davis & Langdale Company) in 1963, and most recently in 2004 at Davis & Langdale Company.

A group of 20 paintings by York was exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1982. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including the widely traveled “American Still life: 1945–1983,” organized by the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, in 1983–1984.

The gallery is at 231 East 60th Street. For information, 212-838-0333.
