Guitar Concert

RIDGEFIELD — On Sunday, February 25, classical and flamenco guitarist Timothy Lawler will perform in concert at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church. His program will include works by J.S. Bach, Villa-Lobos and Juan Martin. The concert will begin at 4 pm.

Mr Lawler built the instrument on which he will perform.

Mr Lawler is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His first CD, Two Arts, was released in 1997. His playing is also featured by the Connecticut Classical Guitar Society on its new CD, Romantic Reverie, and his recordings have been heard frequently on Connecticut Public Radio and other area classical stations.

Sunday’s program will begin with Suite II by J.S. Bach, transcribed for guitar. Suite Populair Bresilienne, by the Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos, shows the influence of dance rhythms and popular song forms.

Mr Lawler will also perform Siguiriyas, a traditional flamenco form categorized as “cante jondo,” or deep song, as well as Alegrias, which reflects a “cante chico,” or light-hearted approach.

Admission to Sunday’s concert is free; donations are welcome. St Stephen’s Church is at 351 Main Street (Route 35) in Ridgefield. For additional information, call 203/438-3789.
