Cartelli's Goal Wins It In OT; Wrestlers Topple Weston

Domenic Cartelli netted the overtime game-winner as Newtown High School's hockey team skated to 6-5 win over visiting Masuk of Monroe, at Danbury Ice Arena, on February 10. Newtown's wrestling team picked up a 66-12 home victory over Weston on Senior Night, February 10.Grapplers Victorious

Cartelli's second tally of the night, assisted by Scott McLean, gave Newtown a 9-7 overall record. Cartelli also assisted three goals, and McLean also had two goals and a trio of assists in the matchup.

David Brestovansky had a goal and an assist, Lucas O'Brien also scored, and Michael McCann logged an assist.

Newtown goaltender Kyle Murphy was credited with 51 saves.

On the wrestling mat, the Nighthawks recorded nine pins en route to the victory. Results by weight class are as follows:

132: Newtown forfeit, 6-0 Weston lead.

138: Anthony Piazza earned a 15-11 decision over Christian Cuevas, making the score 6-3.

145: Ed Lovely pinned Jack Braden in 0:37, 9-6 Newtown.

152: Alex Stavola pinned Jackson Quist in 1:41, 15-6.

160: Peter Mihok pinned Leif Kronberg in 0:55, 21-6.

170: Joe Accousti pinned Brandon Postlethwaite in 0:39, 27-6.

182: Newtown forfeit, 27-12.

195: Anthony Falbo pinned Michael Otworth in 1:03, 33-12.

220: Tom Long earned a 6-0 decision over Josh Lachs, 36-12.

285: Andy Hubina won via forfeit, 42-12.

106: Nikolas Accousti pinned Jack Tunney in 1:30, 48-12.

113: Justin Bogdanoff pinned Tony Fontana in 4:40, 54-12.

120: Jack Wellman pinned Jake Cavicchia in 1:45, 60-12.

126: Aaron Occhipinti pinned Daniel Valentine in 1:48, 66-12.

The wrestling season continues with the South-West Conference championships on Saturday, February 13. The SWC teams will clash at Masuk High, 1014 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, beginning at 9 am.
