Richard F. Shanahan

Richard F. Shanahan, 78, husband of Sheila (Courtney) Shanahan of 26 Appleblossom Lane, Newtown, died February 10 at Danbury Hospital.

He was born in County Tipperary, Ireland on February 8, 1922, son of the late Michael and Winifred (Houlthan) Shanahan. He attended schools in Ireland and graduated from engineering college in Ireland. During World War II, he served in the Irish Army.

He came to the United States and Newtown in 1960, and was employed by IBM in Fishkill, N.Y. as an electrical engineer, until his retirement in 1987.

Mr Shanahan was past vice-president of the Danbury Chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a communicant of St Rose of Lima Church. An avid reader and author, he had just completed a book entitled Across the Bridge.

He is survived besides his wife by three sons, Michael Shanahan of Woodbury, Sean Shanahan of Litchfield, and Terrence Shanahan of New Milford; three daughters, Maureen Tremarzo of Pawling, N.Y., Sheila Mapes of Poughquag, N.Y. and Patricia Fonseca of Naugatuck. He is also survived by two brothers, Patrick Shanahan of East Meadow, N.Y. and John Shanahan of New York City. He has three sisters living in Ireland and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held February 14 from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown and at St Rose of Lima for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial was in St Rose Cemetery.
