In Memoriam

Morris Izen

Morris Izen, who died this past July, joined the teaching staff of Newtown in 1948. He was assigned to the Dodgingtown one-room schoolhouse where he taught multi-age groupings while living in the Parker House (Yankee Drover) with other teachers. In the 1950s, Moe taught at the high school (Hawley and Middle School) before moving to Middle Gate when it opened in 1965.

His interest in history made him an avid storyteller who could regale a crowd with escapades of early Newtowners.

Morris retired from teaching in 1981. During his teaching career he touched the lives of many children.

Morris was known for his quick wit and tolerance. He shared his literary and theatrical interests with students and friends.

He will be remembered for his gentle ways and easy smiles.
