The Town Bike & Trails Committee has three meetings planned for Wednesday, February 12. Residents should note the third meeting will be at a location differnt than originally announced.

The first meeting will convene at noon, when members meet at the gravel parking area opposite 112 Alberts Hill Road. This is a change from the original agenda that indicated the group would meet at the north end of Upper Paugussett State Forest on Hanover Road.

This portion of the meeting will consist of a trail walk and evaluation of Al’s Trail. Members of the committee will be working with National Park Service staff to develop a protocol for assessing trails.

According to notes on the updated agenda, the hike is open to the public but is not a guided or recreational hike.

"The terrain is muddy and has fallen trees. Please bring appropriate footwear and clothing as well as water and food," the post notes.

The second meeting then be at 6 pm. This will be a meeting of the Bike & Trails Committee Grant Advisory Subcommittee.

This group will meet in meeting room 3 of Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street.

The full commission’s February 12 meeting had originally been announced for 7 pm at the community center. It will now take place at Newtown Municipal Center. It will follow the Subcommittee meeting, in the same meeting room, and will still begin at 7 pm.

The public is welcome to attend any Town of Newtown board or commission meeting.

The Bike & Trails Committee was recently notified of a National Parks Service nonmonetary assistance grant that will focus on Al’s Trial and the opportunities it brings to those who utilize it. The trail stretches 10½ miles through a greenway in Newtown. The trail is made up of seven sections.

According to its website (alstrail.org), Al's Trail winds through a state forest, a state park, town forests, town open space, and private property (with easements), all within three miles of the center of town.

The Bike & Trails Committee has announced an off-site midday meeting of a subcommittee on February 12 that will have members and attendees walking a section of Al's Trail, before reconvening that evening for a second meeting, at Newtown Municipal Center. The full Bike & Trails Committee will then meet, also at the municipal center.
