Hospital Hosts Variety Of Screenings, Support, Classes, Lectures

BRIDGEPORT — Bridgeport Hospital is offering a number of February screenings, support groups, classes and lectures that are free or low cost, and are open to the public:

Fitness Classes — Bridgeport Hospital’s Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers offers fitness classes throughout the year at its Shelton site, 4 Corporate Drive. Classes include shoulder conditioning for the overhead athlete, low back reconditioning, special populations fitness/wellness, women’s strength training, golf fitness and personal training. First Aid And Safety Classes — Bridgeport Hospital’s Emergency Care Institute will offer the following American Heart Association self-care classes at the hospital, 267 Grant Street. Registration is required. Call 203-384-4497.

*Administration of Medicine Class – Tuesday, February 14, 6:30 to 9:30 pm. The cost is $50 for the full program (three-year certification) and $25 for injectable medications only.

*Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers — Wednesday, February 15, 6 to 10 pm. The cost is $90 ($65 for those with an unexpired American Heart Association certification card).

Moving Forward — Bridgeport Hospital’s Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society will sponsor a free meeting in the Moving Forward support and educational series for cancer survivors, Wednesday, February 15, 5 to 7:30 pm, at 5520 Park Avenue, Trumbull. The topic is “Ask the Doctor.” A light supper will be served. Registration is required. Call 203-563-1523.

Ostomy Support — Bridgeport Hospital will sponsor a free ostomy support meeting on Sunday, February 19, 2 pm, at Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut, 40 Lindeman Drive, Trumbull. The meeting is open to anyone/significant others who has had/or will have an ostomy operation, such as colostomy, urostomy, or ileostomy. Better Breathing Club — The Better Breathing Club will meet Friday, February 24, 1:30 pm, in the first-floor Administration Conference Room at the Bridgeport Hospital, 267 Grant Street. The support group meeting is open to anyone with chronic respiratory disease. To register, call 203-336-7375.

Heart Lecture — Bridgeport Hospital will present the free lecture, “Heart All A-Flutter? Get Your Rhythm Back,” Tuesday, February 28, 7 pm, at the Trumbull Marriott, 180 Hawley Lane. Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery M. Clive Robinson, MD and cardiac electrophysiologist Murali Chiravuri, MD, will discuss the causes of and latest treatments for atrial fibrillation, the most common type of heart rhythm disorder. Smoking Cessation Program — Bridgeport Hospital’s Respiratory Therapy Department and Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute will offer Quit Smart, a four-part smoking cessation program, Wednesdays, February 29, March 14, 21, and 28, 6 to7:30 pm, in the first floor Administration Conference Room at Bridgeport Hospital, 267 Grant Street.
