Bluebird Nest Box Workshop

DERBY — The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Kellogg Environmental Center in partnership with Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society is sponsoring a Bluebird Nest Box Workshop on Saturday, February 25, from 10:30 am to noon.

Families and individuals will have the opportunity to build their own bluebird nest box to take home. The event will also feature information on the natural history and behavior of the bird, how to locate acceptable areas to post a nest box, and how to monitor for threats to the birds and the nesting site. It is important to understand how to monitor and care for a nest box to ensure bluebird nesting and fledging of young.

Following the presentation, families may work together to build their own box. Wood pieces and nails are provided. Participants are encouraged to supply their own hammer if possible.

Due to limited supplies, there will be enough materials to construct one box per family. Plans will be provided for those who wish to make additional boxes on their own. Registration is required for anyone interested in building a bluebird nest box.

Members of Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society will be on hand to help with the workshop and answer questions.

The program will be presented, free of charge, at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue. Donations will be gratefully accepted. Children ages 8 and older are welcome, but need to be accompanied by an adult.
