Philip Carr      Varnum

The Ultimate           Gentleman

Philip Carr Varnum, 90, died on February 6 at The Homesteads of Newtown, where he had lived since March 2005. Prior to his move to Newtown, Mr Varnum had been a resident of Stamford for 68 years.

Mr Varnum was born and raised in Jonesville, Mich., the second child of Georgia Pomeroy and Richard Saltonstall Varnum. He was a 1937 graduate of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, where he financed his way through college by teaching ballroom dancing. On graduation day he married his college sweetheart, Laurie Nesta Gross. Mrs Varnum died in 2000 after 63 years of marriage.

After graduation Mr Varnum worked as a licensed pharmacist at The Glenbrook Pharmacy in Stamford, Conn., until 1965 when he founded Varnum’s Pharmacy in New Canaan in partnership with his son, P. Clark Varnum.

Mr Varnum was a member of Union Memorial Church, a member of the Masonic Lodge Union #5, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, and the National Association of Retail Pharmacists.

He was past president of Connecticut Pharmaceutical Association, Southwestern Pharmaceutical Association. He was the ultimate gentleman who will be remembered for his professionalism, integrity, and love of family.

He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Walker of Arlington, Texas; his three sons and their wives, Clark and Linda Varnum of Pawleys Island, S.C.; R. Todd and Sheila Varnum of Naples, Fla., and Jeffrey C. and Doris Varnum of Sugar Loaf, N.Y.; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be private but those wishing to honor the life of Philip Varnum may do so with a contribution to Union Memorial Church, 58 Church Street, Stamford CT 06906-1796.

Arrangements were handled by Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.
