Newtown High School Lists Scholarships
The Newtown High School Guidance Department announces that the Awards Nights will be held Monday, June 5, and Tuesday, June 6. Guidance requests that all area organizations planning to present scholarships during these evenings submit all recipient names to Lynn Korotash in the guidance department, t 426-7651, by Monday, May 1.
The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically the national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.
The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.
If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.
Connecticut Forest & Park Association/Goodwin Memorial Scholarship â This scholarship offers financial aid to students who are Connecticut residents who plan to enroll or are presently enrolled in an undergraduate curriculum in silviculture or forest resource management. Annual scholarships of $1,000 to $5,000 will be awarded to a limited number of students for postsecondary education. The deadline is April 1.
UNICO National Bridgeport Chapter â A high school senior with Italian heritage will be awarded $500 and an opportunity to compete in the UNICO National Scholarship Contest, which will offer five awards of $6,000. Financial need will be considered. All complete applications must be returned to the Career Center by February 14.
Student-View Scholarship â College-bound high school seniors are eligible to apply for one $3,000 scholarship, two $1,000 scholarships, and six $500 scholarships sponsored by Student Insights. There are no minimum SAT or ACT scores or minimum grade point average and no lengthy application process. A 15â20 minute application survey is required. The scholarships will be awarded via a random drawing of all completed applications. Apply online at www.student-view.com by April 15.
Nutmeg Statewide PTA â Two scholarships in the amounts of $1,250 and $250 to graduating seniors from PTA/PTSA high schools will be awarded at the CT PTA Convention in April. Applicants must be planning to attend a four-year college to pursue a career in service to children other than teaching. Class rank, community/school service, and a one-page essay will be considered. Completed applications must be returned to the Career Center by March 13.
Kohlâs Kids Who Care â This scholarship program recognizes outstanding young people, ages 6 to 18, for their volunteer activities in the community. Each store location will recognize two winners to compete at the regional level. Regional winners will receive $1,000 scholarships and will compete at the national level. The Career Center has nomination forms or they can be downloaded from www.kohlscorporation.com. Completed nominations must be returned to any Kohlâs Customer Service Desk by March 15.
Michaels Jewelers Foundation Scholarship â A $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to two high school student athletes who will enroll at the school of business administration at any campus. Financial need, scholarship, citizenship, and business promise will be considered. Special consideration is given to individuals of median rank in class who are not eligible for financial assistance based on high scholastic achievement. The scholarship is renewable for each year of study. Applications are due by April 15.
Keppra Family Epilepsy Scholarship Program â This program will provide several one-time $5,000 scholarships to students with epilepsy. The selection process is based on both academic and personal achievement through participation in activities outside of school and serving as a positive role model. The Career Center has applications or visit the website at www.keppra.com. The deadline is August 15.
Connecticut Choral Society Scholarships â Three scholarships for $1,000 will be awarded to high school juniors and seniors from the greater Danbury-Waterbury region. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, February 10, and are available from the NHS Choral Director. Additional information is also available from Nancy Liedlich at 264-5927.
Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholarship â A $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior enrolled in a Fairfield County or New Haven County high school. Applicants must plan to attend an accredited college or university as a full time student in an approved engineering program. The minimum composite SAT is 1100 and GPA minimum is 3.50. National Federation of the Blind Scholarships â The NFB provides a broad array of scholarships to recognize achievement by blind scholars. All applicants must be legally blind and pursuing or planning to pursue a full time postsecondary course of study at a US institution. The deadline for the application is March 31.
Connecticut Association of Women Police â This scholarship is for high school seniors (male or female) who will be pursing a degree in criminal justice. The FAFSA form must be completed and a high school transcript, teacher or counselor recommendation, and personal essay are also required. Applications must received by April 30.
Project Friendship Scholarship â Friendship Dairies will award two scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 to college bound high school seniors from each county in Connecticut. The criteria for selecting the finalists will be based on academic achievement and a demonstration of leadership in school and/or community work that promotes a safe and friendly environment. Applications are available at www.friendshipdairies.com. The deadline is March 31.
