It wasnât a resounding start to the winter post-season, but it was at least a decent start.
The Newtown High School girlsâ indoor track team took third at the South-West Conference championships over the weekend while the boys took fifth.
Wrestling is up next, this weekend, while swimming and girlsâ basketball open next week.
Then itâs boysâ basketball and hockey.
And before you know it, itâs time for spring. So enjoy this while you can.
INDOOR TRACK
Girls â 3rd at SWCs
Boys â 5th at SWCs
When it comes to cross country and outdoor track, the Newtown High School girls are the class of the South-West Conference. But in indoor track and field, at the SWC championships last weekend at Staples High School in Westport, it was Westonâs show.
With three new meet records, the Lady Trojans stormed to the conference championship while the Lady Nighthawks battled their way to a third-place finish behind Masuk. Sadie Ball had the lone first-place finish for the locals, capturing the 1,600-meter race over Anna Griffin of Weston and Kayla Calabrese of Masuk.
Things did not go quite as well for the boys, who came in fifth just behind New Milford Masuk and Brookfield but well behind Weston.
âIt was the best showing the girls have had in a long time,â said head coach Doug Russell. âUnfortunately for the boys, we just didnât have enough field event people.â
For the girls, Ball also came in second in the 1,000-meter race, just three-tenths of a second behind Rebecca Fine of Weston. Lindsay Weber was second in the high jump at 4-8, just behind Olivia Pruszko of Masuk.
Other results â
Moira Collier was third in the 1,000 meters and fourth in the 1,600 meters; Alison McEmber was fifth in the 600 meters; Michelle Brennan was third in the 3,200 meters; Jaclyn Van Waalwijk was third in the shot put; Lindsay Weber was second in the high jump; and Remy Ball tied for fifth in the pole vault.
In the relay events, Newtown was fourth in the 4x750 relay, sixth in the sprint medley relay, third in the 4x375 relay and fifth in the 4x225 relay.
For the boys, Zach Schwartz put together the best performance, finishing second in the 1,000 meters (behind Ryan Lane of Weston) and second in the 3,200 meters (behind John Loeser of Weston). The 3,200-meter race was the best event for the âHawks, who had Schwartz come in second, Charlie Baldour come in fourth and Eric MacKnight come in fifth.
Baldour was also second in the 1,600 meters behind Loeser.
Other results â
Eric MacKnight was fifth in the 1,000 meters; Scott Nichols was fourth in the 600 meters; Will Jacobs was sixth in the 45 hurdles; Luke Powers was third in the shot put; and Chris Nuelle was fifth in the pole vault.
The CIAC Class LL state championships will be this weekend at the New Haven Athletic Center.

SWIMMING
Brookfield 95, Newtown 86
New Fairfield 96, Newtown 89
Head coach Matt Childs knew this week would be the toughest part of the schedule for the Newtown High School swim team ⦠and he was right.
After seven weeks and eight meets, the Nighthawks were an impressive 7-1 with a loss to powerhouse Pomperaug as the only blemish.
Well, the âHawks have two more blemishes on their record after suffering losses to four-time defending South-West Conference champion Brookfield last Friday and New Fairfield on Tuesday night. A host of personal best times and a new pool record were not enough to carry the âHawks against two of the toughest teams in the SWC.
Against Brookfield â
Stefan Toi broke the old pool record (set by Dave Hiteshew in 1978 at 2:05.40) in the 200-yard individual medley with a blistering finish of 2:05.33 ⦠which, oddly enough, was just 1/100th of a second slower than Billy Magin of Brookfield.
Toi did turn in one of Newtownâs only individual first-place finishes, capturing the 100-yard butterfly at 57.62, just a half-second ahead of Delcasino of Brookfield. Anthony Fiore had the other first-place finish, recording a time of 58.23 in the 100-yard backstroke.
The personal bests, meanwhile, were numerous.
All three relay teams in the 200 medley notched personal bests as did the 400 freestyle relay of Max Barrett, Toi, Brendan Deveney and Fiore. Individually, Deveney (200 free), Kevin Herring (200 free), Rob Morlath (200 free, 500 free), Chris Hoagland (diving), Jacquelyn Hornak (diving), Dave Rothacker (500 free), Mike Parker (100 back) and Tony Fragoso (100 breast) all registered personal best times.
The meet was relatively close through the first four events, but Brookfield â which recently held off Pomperaug in a tight SWC meet â swept diving, went 1-2 in the 100-yard freestyle and coasted to the finish.
Against New Fairfield â
Toi (200 individual medley) and Chris Hoagland (diving) were the only individual winners for the âHawks, but Jackie Hornak (diving), Barrett (100 freestyle), Deveney (500 freestyle), Fiore (100 backstroke) and Allen Hubbard (100 breaststroke) all secured second-place finishes.
The swimmers will close out the regular dual meet season on Friday when they host Shepaug. The SWC championships will begin next week.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Newtown 62, New Fairfield 30
Masuk 42, Newtown 37
The plan worked great in the first period.
After that, well â¦
With the mind-set of pushing the ball up the floor on offense and using an aggressive half-court trap on defense, the Newtown High School girlsâ basketball team quickly took charge of its South-West Conference tilt with rival Masuk on Tuesday night. But with the Lady Nighthawks holding an 18-9 lead in the first period, Alexis Bates of Masuk drained a three-pointer at the buzzer and everything seemed to fall apart after that.
Turnovers and poor shooting did most of the damage, but Masuk also figured out how to break the trap and escaped with a 42-37 win.
âWe were not able to hit a lot of close shots,â said head coach Shawn OâBrien, âbut we were getting in our trap in the first half and just didnât get that opportunity in the second half. And Masuk did an outstanding job of getting back on defense.â
After Bates popped in the trey to end the first period, Morgan Knees opened the second period with a turnaround bucket in the low post to put the Lady Nighthawks up by eight. But the Pantherettes whittled away at that deficit and took their first lead with a 10-foot jumper with six seconds to go in the half.
At that point, Masuk had a 27-26 advantage and both teams opened the second half cold as ice. Knees popped in a shot from the low post, off an assist from Kristi Nowak, with 4:02 left in the third period â the first points by either team in the half. But the Pantherettes recaptured the lead by the close of the third and kept the âHawks at bay in the fourth.
The Pantherettes went up as much as six points with 29 seconds to go before Christie Iwanicki briefly gave fresh life to the âHawks with a long three-pointer with 10.7 seconds to go. A pair of Masuk free throws, however, closed out the game with 7.4 seconds remaining.
Carly Curran led Newtown with 11 points, eight of those coming in the opening period. Iwanicki and Knees tossed in 10 points apiece and Ciara Simek added six. Kelsey Johnson of Masuk led all scorers with 17 markers while Bates tossed in 12.
The locals dropped to 10-7 overall, 9-5 in the SWC. The loss followed a 62-30 win over New Fairfield in which Kacy Foehrenbach canned 14 points with the aid of four three-pointers. Iwanicki and Lauren Ciccomascolo tossed in 10 points apiece.
The âHawks will host Bethel on Friday night and will try to obtain some revenge for a season-opening loss suffered at the hands of the Lady Wildcats. The girls will be in Stratford on Monday and will close out the regular season next Wednesday in Milford against Lauralton Hall.

The Newtown High School wrestling team was sitting on a 36-0 lead over Fairfield Prep with eight weight classes to go last Saturday, but head coach Alan Potter knew the match was far from over.
âLook, this meet is not over by a long shot,â he said to his wrestlers after pulling them together. âWe canât give up the pin.â
Yet five weight classes later â after giving up just one pin â that comfortable 36-point lead had narrowed to an unsettling 11-point lead. But Aadil Ansari sealed the win for Newtown at 275 pounds, pinning Nick Tomboulides in just 41 seconds.
The 112-pound class finished off the match and Newtown freshman John Gouveia tangled with Dennis Lee in the most exciting class of the afternoon. But Gouveia, with more than 20 wins to his credit, dropped a tough, 5-4 decision.

Back on December 28 things were about as even keel as they could get for the Newtown High School hockey team â two wins, two losses and two ties in a season that just about everyone expected to be tough on the Nighthawks.
Well, it has been. The New Year has been particularly rough on the locals, now stuck on a seven-game losing streak after a 5-3 loss to Bethel-Brookfield on February 1 and a 4-1 loss to New Milford on February 4.
In the loss to Bethel-Brookfield, Blake Bell, Taylor Casey and Francis Oggeri scored the goals off assists from Matt Wright and Braden Conlan. The Bethel-Brookfield co-op scored the first five goals of the contest before Bell broke the ice at 11:45 of the second period.
Pete Oggeri and Mike Jurasek shared time in the net and combined to make 25 saves.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Masuk 52, Newtown 36
Â
With five losses in its previous six games, the Newtown High School boysâ basketball team was looking for something â some ray of hope â in its South-West Conference battle with Masuk on Tuesday night.
How does a 14-8 lead after one period sound? Sounds great, but things quickly soured for the Nighthawks, who scored just eight points in the next two periods and fell 52-36 to drop to 4-11 overall, 2-9 in the SWC.
Mike Kennedy canned a game-high 14 points, virtually all of them from the foul line after hitting 12-of-16 from the stripe. Joe DeVellis tossed in 12 points and five other players added two points apiece. The âHawks had just nine field goals in the game, one of those from beyond the arc.
The locals will be in Bethel on Friday to try and snap their four-game losing streak and then will host Stratford on Tuesday.
