BRIDGEPORT â Bridgeport Hospital offers the following classes and programs to new and expectant parents. All classes meet at the hospital, 267 Grant Street, and registration is required. For information or to register, call toll free 888-357-2396.
Breastfeeding: Provides information about breastfeeding, including expressing and storing breast milk, strategies for continuing to breastfeed when returning to work, and the support role of fathers. The one-hour class is taught by a board-certified lactation consultant.
Childbirth Preparation: Total preparation for childbirth, including Lamaze breathing and relaxation techniques, managing labor, comfort options, cesarean section, postpartum recovery, and newborn care, as well as a tour of the Birthplace. Offered as one-day weekend class or a series of five weekly two-hour evening classes.
Refresher: A 2½-hour review of important childbirth information for parents, including a discussion of breathing and relaxation techniques, the stages of labor and delivery, and a tour of The Birthplace at Bridgeport Hospital.
Sibling Class and Tour: One-hour tour allows soon-to-be-siblings, age 3 and older, to see where their mother will have her baby, and they will see babies in the nursery, watch a movie, practice with baby dolls and learn about life at home with the new baby.
Toddler Sibling Tour: A 45-minute version of the sibling tour for children under 3 years old.
Family at Birth Class: Prepares children to attend the birth of their sibling. Parents, child and a special coach for the child who will be present at the birth must attend. The 90-minute program is individualized for each family.
Parents Tour: A one-hour tour of The Birthplace, including labor and delivery rooms, nursery, newborn intensive care unit and postpartum unit.
Infant Massage: A one-hour class that provides instruction on how to promote infant health while strengthening the bond between parent and child, and providing health benefits for infants.
Just In Case: A two-hour class including basic instruction in infant CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), first aid and safety in the home. Recommended for all infant caregivers, parents, and grandparents. Children taking the course must be at least 12 years old. Participants may go on to take a certification class.
