Winifred Mary McGuinness Doyle, 88, of Milford, died February 6 in her home, surrounded by her family. Mrs Doyle was born in Bridgeport, daughter of John J. McGuinness and Winifred Mulloy McGuinness.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Thomas M. Doyle, former comptroller of Bridgeport and finance director of New Britain, her four children and their spouses, Thomas M. Doyle, Jr, and Susan Doyle of Newtown, Kevin J. Doyle and Pearl Granat of New York City, Mary Ann Doyle and Steven I. Froot of Riverdale, N.Y., Michael M. Doyle and Aileen Doyle of Seymour; her sister, Mary Lou Wynne of Trumbull; her grandchildren, Eireann, Kevin Jr, Maylene, Michael Jr, Daniel, and Marisol; a great-grandchild, Karena; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters Sally Elwood and Peggy McGuinness; and her brother, Judge John J. McGuinness.
Mrs Doyle attended St Patrickâs School, Central High School, and the Bridgeport Normal School and was in the first graduating class of New Haven State Teachers College (now Southern Connecticut State University), in the Class of 1940. A devoted educator, she taught in Bridgeport at Sheridan and Read Schools and for 20 years in the third grade of Maplewood School. While in Bridgeport, Mrs Doyle was a member of the St Augustine Ladies Guild and the Bridgeport Education Association. Upon her retirement, she moved to New Britain and was an active member of the New Britain General Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering in the emergency room and gift shop for 15 years. She was also an active member of the Bridgeport Retired Teachers Association.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 10, at 10 am, from the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull, and at 11 am in St Patrick Church, Bridgeport, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St Michaelâs Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call Friday, February 9, from 3 to 8 pm.
