âSIMPLE FORMS: SOL LEWITTâ TO OPEN AT ALLEN ART MUSEUM ON FEB. 27
AVV 8-9 #667714
OBERLIN, OHIO â The Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College will present âSimple Forms: Sol LeWitt at the Allenâ in the Ellen Johnson Gallery February 27 through June 17.
In 1972, the Allen acquired a major work by Sol LeWitt, â49 Three-Part Variations on Three Different Kinds of Cubes,â circa 1967â71. This early work underscores LeWittâs belief that the concept is the most important aspect of a work of art, or, in his words, âThe idea becomes a machine that makes the art.â
Newly restored and on view for the first time in more than a decade, the Allenâs enamel-on-steel piece explores three types of cubes: solid cube, cube with opposite sides removed and cube with one side removed, representing all possible permutations of these cubes and their arrangements. â49 Three-Part Variationsâ will be exhibited with a new wall drawing that LeWitt has designed for the Ellen Johnson Gallery and donated to the Allen. The exhibition will also includes a selection of works by LeWitt borrowed from the artistâs own private collection.
The museum is at 87 North Main Street. For information, www.oberlin.edu/allenart or 440-775-8665.
