Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*The Senior Center will be closed on February 19 for Presidents’ Day.

*CASINO GAMBLING AT MOHEGAN SUN on February 13, snow date is February 15. Depart at 8:30 am; cost is $27 per person, which includes motor coach transportation, $10 food coupon, and $10 free bet on the big wheel.

*On Wednesdays at 10:30 AM make CARDS FOR THE TROOPS serving overseas. Every month they have been sent out.

*AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE available on Mondays only through April 9, 9 am to noon by appointment only. Bring last year’s tax return and any other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 to set up an appointment.

*BABY CONTEST FOR MARCH. Bring in your baby picture by the second week in February. We will have a contest in March to guess who’s picture is who.

*Join us every Wednesday at 10:30 am to make cards to send to the troops serving overseas.

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM will be on Thursday and Friday, March 22–23 from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Must attend both classes. The cost is $10 per person payable on the day of the class.

*Newtown Social Services will be taking heating applications for deliverable fuels for oil, propane, and kerosene. Assistance is for delivery until March. Call Ann Piccini at 270-4330 for more information or an application for Yankee Gas or CL&P.

*FOR WEATHER CLOSINGS, watch channel 3. The center will close if the Town of Newtown closes, although classes and lunch may be canceled.

 

Day Trips

*Wednesday, February 28, at Westchester Dinner Theater see Nunsensations. Depart 9:30 am from the Senior Center. $71 per person.

*It’s Showtime with TONY KENNY’S IRELAND, Thursday, March 15, WITH LUNCH at Venus De Milo in Swansea, Mass. Cost is $85 per person. Depart The Senior Center at 7 am.

*Madame-Butterfly will be presented by the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center on Sunday, April 22. Butterfly is sung in Italian with English supertitles. Lunch is included at Les Sans Sulottes. Departure is at 8:30 am. Cost is $160 per person.

Overnight Trips

*FUTURE TRIPS include a 3-day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch countryside and visit the King Tut exhibit, July 25–27; an 8-day tour of Scotland, August 22–30; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise September 3–8. Trip booklets are now available at the front desk.

Tuesday: February 13: Beef tips with mushroom gravy; parsley boiled potatoes; green peas, whole wheat bread, seasonal fresh fruit;

Wednesday: Valentine’s Day Special: Chicken cordon bleu, rice pilaf, broccoli florets, Italian bread, Valentine’s day cake;

Thursday: Chicken quarter with garlic sauce, rice and beans, Italian blend vegetables, dinner roll, grape juice, mandarin oranges.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: February 19: Closed for Presidents’ Day

Tuesday: February 20: Chinese New Year Special: Stir fry beef & broccoli, fried rice, Oriental blend vegetables, oatmeal bread mandarin oranges.

Monday: AM AARP income tax assistance, pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM Mohegan Sun, pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Cards for the Troops, Tai Chi & Chi Kung, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM walking for fitness.
