Revenge is a dish best served cold ⦠and where does it get any colder than on the ice at a hockey game?
Last Friday night the Newtown High School hockey team renewed acquaintances with Southington, the team that had pinned a 5-4 defeat on the Nighthawks just six days before at the Trinity College rink in Hartford.
But the âHawks were on their home ice and junior Francis Oggeri was in his comfort zone as hit hat trick helped lift the locals to a 7-5 win over the Blue Knights.
The âHawks started off slow, but rallied back to win. After trailing for most of the game, the locals tied the Blue Knights twice â at 3-3 and then at 5-5 â before taking the lead halfway through the third. Fittingly, it was Oggeri, with his first hat-trick of the season, who scored the eventual game-winner.
In the first period though, no one from Newtown looked as if they were ready to play. After goalie Mitch Bloomberg deflected a puck, Newtownâs defense was slow to respond and Southingtonâs Pat Lautier, who also had a hat-trick, took advantage. He flipped the puck into the top left past Bloomberg to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
But Southington was only just beginning. Lautier again out-skated the Nighthawks and scored off of a breakaway and, later, Alex Waters made a nice pass to Joey Harvey, who whipped the puck by Bloomberg to give the Knights a 3-0 lead.
Thatâs when Newtown sophomore Christian Beitel, the teamâs leading goal- and point-scorer, came back with a breakaway goal to cut the lead to 3-1. And moments later Oggeri displayed some nice skating and puck handling of his own as he blew by the Southington players, shifted seamlessly from right to left, faked out the Southington netminder and cashed in an easy goal to end the first period.
Oggeri struck once more in the second to tie the game at three-all. Lautier then got his hat-trick to give Southington a 4-3 lead but the Knightsâ Mike Bernard scored to close out the second period and post his team to a 5-3 advantage.
But Max Beitel scored seconds into the third period and brother Christian notched his second goal of the night right after to tie the game back up at 5-5. Newtown was clearly picking up its level of play while a small bench on Southingtonâs side was beginning to get worn down.
And halfway through the third Oggeri scored again, putting the âHawks on top for the first time, 6-5. Matt Wright added the last goal at the buzzer, knocking the pick into an open net to finish off the game ⦠and the win.
After a rocky start, Bloomberg played great in the net for the âHawks. Dealing with more than 40 shots on net â compared to the 24 that Newtownâs offense took â Bloomberg came through big.
The win brought the Nighthawks to 10-4-0 on the year and in third place in the Division III state rankings (posted on www.tcrink.com).

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Newtown 47, Weston 18
Newtown 52, Stratford 17
Consider it a vacation.
After a tough loss to Masuk on January 23 and a hard-fought win against Pomperaug on January 26, the Newtown High School girlsâ basketball team was entitled to a little break from the rigors of its South-West Conference schedule.
The Lady Nighthawks eased into that break with a 59-38 win over Brookfield on January 30 and then coasted to a pair of wins this past week against two doormats in the SWC â Weston (47-18) and Stratford (52-17).
With the wins, the locals boosted their record to 11-6, 6-3 in the SWC. After a game with Immaculate on Friday, the girls will close out their regular season schedule with a couple of tougher opponents â Lauralton Hall on February 12 and Notre Dame on February 14.
In the win over Weston, Christie Iwanicki led all scorers with 20 points, canning a pair of three-pointers along the way. Darcy Fiscella chipped in eight points while Katie Powers added seven points. Katie Condon and Emily Leidlein both hit three-pointers, but for Leidlein it was the first of her varsity career.
In the win over Stratford, Morgan Knees canned 12 points and Iwanicki added 10 more while Nora Lynn Skimko â with a pair of three-pointers â added eight. Power also popped in eight while FIscella chipped in seven.
The locals will be in Danbury on Friday to take on Immaculate before squaring off against Lauralton Hall on Monday (at home) and Notre Dame on Wednesday (in Fairfield) to close out the regular season.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Weston 79, Newtown 69
Stratford 58, Newtown 44
It almost seems as if fate is trying to balance things out, doesnât it?
The Newtown High School boysâ basketball team won 10 of its first 12 contests â four of those by four points or less â and people began marveling at the wondrous turnaround of a team that was 4-16 a year ago.
Whatever luck the Nighthawks might have enjoyed in the first half as utterly dissipated as the locals dropped their fourth consecutive game on Tuesday night, a 58-44 decision at the hands of Stratford. Coupled with a 79-69 loss to powerhouse Weston last week, the âHawks have dropped to 10-6 overall, 5-4 in the South-West Conference.
Offensively, the âHawks did fine against the speedy Trojans last Friday as Kevin Troy poured in 27 points while draining four three-point baskets and Danny Smith added 18 more, but those pesky Trojans had a 19-point lead at the half that the locals could never recover from. Plus, John Galvin just dominated in the middle with 30 points and 18 rebounds and went 14-of-17 shooting from the foul line.
Against Stratford, the ability to put the ball in the basket â or the lack thereof â is what did âem in. Troy had 13 points and Smith added 11, but too many times the âHawks were unable to coax a shot through the tin while the Red Devils had much less trouble doing exactly that.
Tim Martin â with a trio of three-pointers â had 23 points to lead all scorers.
The âHawks will look to recover, and snap that streak, on Friday when they host Immaculate.

Staples Duals â Newtown 36, Fairfield Prep 33; Platt 47, Newtown 27; Greenwich over Newtown; Newtown over Holy Cross; Staples over Newtown
In the last week or so, the Newtown High School wrestling team has fallen on some hard times, losing to Stratford and Bunnell while splitting two of five matches last Saturday against Fairfield Prep, Platt, Greenwich, Holy Cross and Staples.
After all of that, the Nighthawks are 10-12 overall and 5-5 in the South-West Conference but still have a chance this weekend to close out the 2006-07 conference season in a nice way at the SWC Tournament in Newtown.
Weigh-in will be from 7 to 8:30 am with the first matches hitting the mat at 10 am.
The âHawks were handled somewhat easily by the Bulldogs of Bunnell last Wednesday, but Chris Marks proved that no matter how dark things looked one should never give up. Down 9-2 and with his back on the mat, he pulled a second-period reversal on John Pantazis and recorded a stunning pin at the 3:49 mark to give the locals a little bit of a boost.
Joel Minalgo (215) also earned a pin during the match while Dana Van Buskirk (125), Jagi Gyamcho (152) and Bryant Aliaga (189) earned three-point decisions.

In the field, Morrissey leapt to a fifth-place finish in the high jump.
âBoth of our teams did well,â said coach Dave Foss, âbut not spectacular. But, overall, it was a solid performance by both teams and as we head to Class LL championships on Saturday weâre hoping to break several school records.â

SWIMMING
Newtown 98, Barlow-Immaculate 85
After a tough struggle against New Fairfield seven days before, the Newtown High School swim team deserved a bit of a break. The Nighthawks got a little one on Tuesday when they hosted the Joel Barlow-Immaculate Co-Op and eased their way to a 98-85 win to improve to 6-3 on the year.
Alex Kron (200 freestyle) and Stefan Toi (100 freestyle) were the only individual winners, but a slew of second- and third-place finishes â Luke (200 free, 500 free) and Anthony Fiore (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke) each had two second-place finishes â helped lead the way.
It was Toiâs win in the 100 freestyle that proved to be the most exciting race of the night. After losing out to Harder by just .27 seconds in the 50 freestyle, Toi returned the favor with a narrow .11 second win in the 100 free.
The Nighthawks will visit Shepaug on Friday and then close out the regular season next Tuesday against Masuk.
