Can it still be nicer in Newtown? Do we have any control?
The plan to put 50,000 square feet of business and retail space along with 224 rental apartments in buildings four stories high, built directly across the street from our homes on Walnut Tree Hill Road in a residential area is unconscionable. We have lived here since 1983, 35 years, and have cherished our Victorian house and the town our four children grew up in.
From Church Hill Road near Exit 10, Walnut Tree Hill Road climbs a hill in a rural neighborhood passing by ten homes, some of which are more than 150 years old. Not that long ago, both phases of Walnut Tree Hill Village were built. This 200-unit, over-55 housing development is already our neighbor in the rear. If this new plan would go through, we would be sandwiched between 424 residences, all of which will be using Walnut Tree Hill Road for entrance and egress. This is not a "not in my backyard" situation. It is just not a practical solution for this property and the overall impact it would cause Walnut Tree Hill Road, Evergreen Road, and to the surrounding area.
How can this be safe and not destroy the character of our neighborhood? The way the traffic is now we have trouble getting out of our driveways or getting our mail, and there have been numerous accidents in this area. Traffic is sure to back up on this road, Church Hill Road, and the Exit 10 ramps, not to mention being an eyesore to all of us and the people driving by on I-84.
Do not let this zoning change happen to allow this type of development in an area where it doesn't belong. Please help us protect our houses, our people, and the character of our neighborhood and town. Attend the zoning meeting on February 15 and let your voice be heard. Sign our online petition atÃÂ
