Nowacki First, Terry And Relay Squad Second In SWC Track Championships
NEW HAVEN – The South-West Conference indoor track and field championships took place at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on February 7, bringing together the best runners, throwers, and jumpers from Newtown and rival teams.
Newtown’s girls’ squad, led by Micaela Nowacki’s first-place finish in the shot-put event, placed fourth as a team with 38 points. Weston won the girls’ competition with 125 points, Pomperaug of Southbury was second with 63, and Masuk of Monroe was third with 49. Ten schools with girls’ lineups scored points in the championships.
The NHS boys, who got a runner-up high jump performance from Cole Terry, came in seventh among 13 teams. Newtown had 27 points. Weston was first with 145, easily outscoring second-place New Fairfield, which racked up 72.
Nowacki’s shot-put throw was 32-03.50. The 4x800 meter relay squad of Erin Tressler, Emma Bayuk, Camryn Cicarelli, and Jess Keller set a school record and was second in a time of 10:07.22. Shay Fahey was fourth in the 55 dash, crossing the finish line in 7.74 seconds. Bayuk placed fourth in the 1600 in 5:27.58. The 4x800 relay of Shelby Tolla, Makenna Cerney, Nicole Russo, and Fahey placed fourth in 1:53.78. The 4x200 relay team of Tolla, Cerney, Nicole Russo, and Fahey was fourth in 1:53.78.
Keller came in fifth in the 600 in 1:44.71. Cerney was fifth in the 55 hurdles in a time of 9.62. Lauren Russo pole vaulted to fifth place, clearing the bar at 8-06. Jackie Sgobbo was fifth in the long jump event (15-06.50).
In the boys’ competition, Terry cleared six feet to claim second in the high jump. Pete Manfredonia came in fourth in the shot-put event with a throw of 41-07.75.
The 4x800 relay contingent of Misa Prud’homme, Joel Duval, Ethan Burg, and David Csordas was fourth in 8:57.09. Burg was fourth in the 3200, finishing in 10:31.35.
Newtown had several more top-ten finishes, including the following fifth- and sixth-place outcomes: Scott Martin was fifth in the pole vault (9-06), Terry placed fifth in the long jump (18-09), Gustavo Porto placed sixth in the 55 dash (6.92), Burg was sixth in the 1000 (2:51.30), and the 4x200 relay team of Jack Lavelle, Kevin Arther, Jason Ferrari, and James Carney was sixth in 1:40.15.
