Newtown Volunteer Recognized

With Scouting’s Highest Adult Honor

MILFORD — A Newtown Scout leader was recognized recently with the Silver Beaver Award, scouting’s highest adult honor. The award was presented on January 24 during the annual recognition dinner of the Connecticut Yankee Council, Boy Scouts of America.

William C. Calderara was nominated by his peers for his involvement in scouting, but also for his commitment to the community as well. Only eight out of the approximately 4,000 adult volunteers in the Connecticut Yankee Council are selected for this honor each year.

Other honorees included John C. Andres from Fairfield; Representative Christopher Caruso from Bridgeport, James Garvin from Darien, John Meyer Gopien from Meriden, William R. Hall, Jr. from Fairfield, Theordore Langevin from Madison, and Debra Parnon from Darien.

Mr Calderara has been involved in Scouting for nearly 30 years in both the Westchester Putnam Council and the Connecticut Yankee Council. He served as Assistant Scoutmaster and Cubmaster in the 1980s, and also served on a troop committee, as a unit commissioner, merit badge counselor, and as vice chairman of finance for the Scatacook District. He currently serves as council treasurer on the Executive Board.

Mr Calderara is an Eagle Scout and the father of an Eagle Scout. He is active in a number of community organizations, including Newtown Rotary. He is a lay member of St Rose of Lima Church and a First Degree Knight with the Virgilius Council, Knights of Columbus. He and his wife Patti live in Newtown.

The recognition dinner celebrates the successes of the Connecticut Yankee Council over the past year. In addition to the Silver Beaver Awards, several veteran volunteers were recognized for their continued commitment and leadership to scouting.

The Connecticut Yankee Council serves more than 25,000 youth in Fairfield, New Haven and parts of Hartford Counties. Scouting’s programs encourage youth to pursue their special interests, make new friends, develop leadership skills, and give back to their community.
