Church Hill Crash

Motorist Lucy Remitz, 17, of 8 Yearling Lane was driving a 1995 Buick Regal westward on Church Hill Road, near the ramps for Exit 10 of eastbound Interstate 84, at about 2:30 pm on January 28, and then slowed for a traffic signal which was turning red, police said.

Westbound motorist Amy Purus, 17, of 51 Bennetts Bridge Road, who was driving a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder, attempted to stop but struck the rear end of the Buick, police said.

There were no injuries. Purus received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

Two Violations

About 8:20 pm on January 30, police stropped motorist Sandra Vita, 56, of Danbury on South Main Street to investigate because the 1998 Toyota Corolla sedan that she was driving did not have illumination above its rear marker plate, as required by law.

After an investigation, police charged Vita with failure to illuminate a rear marker plate and with driving with a suspended license.

Police released Vita on a written promise to appear February 13 in Danbury Superior Court.

Multiple Charges

Police report that at about 8:30 am on February 1, they spotted motorist David Mikienis, 25, of Cheshire driving a vehicle without a front marker plate on it northward on South Main Street, so they stopped him to investigate.

Police said they uncovered two packages of suspected marijuana in the vehicle, as well as three Percocet pills within an unmarked container, plus many smoking pipes.

Charges lodged against Mikienis include possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal storage of narcotics, failure to have a front marker plate, and driving an unregistered vehicle, according to police.

Police released Mikienis on $5,000 bail for a February 15 court appearance.

Criminal Trespassing

According to a police report, at about 12:30 pm on February 2, Travis Schoen, 25, of Danbury illegally entered a building at Fairfield Hills located at 58-R Washington Circle.

Fairfield Hills security staff spotted Schoen and then called police. Police charged Schoen with second-degree criminal trespassing. Police released Schoen on $100 bail for a February 20 court appearance.

Aluminum Theft

Sometime between 5 pm on January 25 and 9 am on January 26, someone stole two barrels of scrap aluminum from a commercial property at 10 Riverside Road in Sandy Hook Center, police said. Police are investigating the case of sixth-degree larceny.

Highway DUI

State police report that at about 2 am on February 3, they stopped motorist Danny Madison, 29, of Waterbury for speeding on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10. State police said Madison then failed field sobriety testing.

State police charged him with driving under the influence, speeding, and driving while under suspension. After processing, Madison was released from custody on $1,000 bail for a February 11 court appearance.

I-84 DUI

State police said they found motorist Jose Altamirano, 52, of Naugatuck asleep while he was parked on the left road shoulder of eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, at about 2 am February 2.

Altamirano was found to be intoxicated, state police said.

State police charged Altamirano with driving under the influence and with illegal parking. After posting $500 bail, Altamirano was released from custody for a February 25 court appearance.

Interstate DUI

According to a state police report, motorist Zachary Hill, 20, of Trumbull was observed driving 99 miles per hour in a 65-mph zone eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 10, about 2:30 am February 1, so they stopped him to investigate.

State police charged Hill with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and passing on the right. Hill later was released on $500 bail for a February 11 court appearance.

Vandalism

Police report that they are investigating a case of vandalism in which someone damaged a rear passenger window of a vehicle at 105-B South Main Street sometime between 5 pm January 31 and 6:10 am February 1. Anyone with information on the case of third-degree criminal mischief is asked to contact Officer John McCluskey at the police station at 426-5841.

Ford Vs Nissan

Police report that motorist Charles Carroll, 33, of Southington, who was driving a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder about 11:40 am January 26, was waiting at a traffic signal on South Main Street, at its intersection with Meadow Brook Road and Botsford Hill Road, when the Nissan was struck from behind by motorist Andy Ho Leung, 27, of Stafford, who was driving a 1999 Ford Taurus.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Leung for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Icy Conditions

About 10:30 am February 1 in icy conditions, motorist William Corey, 20, of 6 Hanover Road, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier on Mt Pleasant Road, lost control of the vehicle, and then drove onto the property 172 Mt Pleasant Road, where he parked the auto, police said.

Motorist Christopher Morgan, 19, of 9 Mt Pleasant Terrace, who was driving a 2002 Dodge Caravan on Mt Pleasant Road, then lost control of that vehicle and drove onto the property at 172 Mt Pleasant Road where the Dodge sideswiped the Chevrolet, police said.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

SUV Vs Pole

Police report that Diane Beaalcazar, 29, of Danbury was driving a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder near 194 Mt Pleasant Road in icy conditions about 10 am February 1, when the vehicle went off the road and struck a utility pole. Beaalcazar was not injured, police said. Police issued her a violation for driving without a license.

Back-To-Back

Police report an accident on Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook about 10 am January 24 in which the rear ends of two autos collided with one another as the two drivers were simultaneously backing out of driveways on opposite sides of the street.

Police said motorist Leigh Barney, 46, of Bristol was backing a 2008 Dodge Charger out of a driveway at 83 Church Hill Road, as motorist Diego Martinez Soto, 26, of 76 Church Hill Road was backing a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta out of a driveway at 76 Church Hill Road.

The rear ends of the two vehicles then collided, police said. There were no injuries.

Police said Soto was driving without a license and performed unsafe backing. Barney also performed unsafe backing, police said.

Camaro Off Road

Police report that motorist Tanner Schmidt, 18, of 1 Phyllis Lane was driving a 1988 Chevrolet Camaro eastward near 53 Hundred Acres Road about 7:30 pm February 1, when the car’s front tires started to lose traction.

Schmidt then lost control of the car and struck a tree along the westbound side of the road, police said.

Schmidt was not injured. Schmidt received a written warning for failure to drive to the right, police said.

Warrant Case

Newtown police said that David Waite, 32, of Southbury contacted Southbury police on February 6 to have them investigate an incident, after which Southbury police realized that Newtown police held an arrest warrant against Waite.

Newtown police then charged Waite with second-degree failure to appear in court and with issuing a bad check. Newtown police made the original arrest against Waite last summer.

Newtown police held Waite on $5,000 bail for a February 7 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
