Snow, Ice Advisory
Newtown Fire Marshal George Lockwood issued an advisory this week about the need to remove snow and ice from roofs to prevent damage.
Snow can block air vents and ducts; freezing and thawing temperatures can create large icicles that overhang walkways. The weight of snow and ice can weaken or buckle roof structures. Snow can sponge up rainwater, adding to the weight problem, but there are things home and business owners can do to prevent problems.
Roofs, especially large, flat roofs, should be checked. Roof drains should be opened to relieve stress and a thorough search made for signs of strain and sagging beams.
Flat roof drainage systems should always be kept clear to minimize the risk of excess roof ponding in the event of heavy rain.
Use care when breaking large icicles hanging from the roof as they can damage gutters and siding.
When using a rake to remove roof snow, remember that roof shingles are brittle when temperatures are low. When working from a ladder remember that rungs may ice up and that snow and ice may collect on boot soles. Snow rakes conduct electricity; keep away from overhead wires.
Check all air vents and exhaust ducts to clothes dryers, fuel tanks, oil and gas furnaces and other openings to be sure they are not being blocked by accumulated snow. Blocked openings prevent proper ventilation and can create health problems. Remove accumulations of snow where they interfere with intake openings and ventilation, Mr Lockwood advised.
