Vehicle Rolled

Newtown Police report Jason Dumas, 50, of New Milford, operating a 2014 Kia Sportage, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 3:27 pm January 12. While negotiating a right-hand curve, Dumas crossed over the center yellow line and went up an embankment off the southbound shoulder of the road. The vehicle then hit a traffic sign and rolled over onto its driver’s side.

Police say Dumas was assessed on scene by Newtown Ambulance but was not transported. The vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action is mentioned in the report.

Slid On Snow

Newtown Police report Jennette Quatro, 40, of Bridgewater, operating a 2000 Toyota Camry, was traveling northbound on Taunton Hill Road at 8:23 am January 14. The roads were snow covered and slick, and Quatro, while negotiating a left-hand curve, went off the road on the right, hitting some rocks. Police say Quatro’s vehicle then returned to the roadway, overcorrected, and went off the roadway to the left side, hitting a tree.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Quatro was issued a verbal warning for driving on the left side of a highway.

Following Too Closely

Newtown Police report Jessica Arrindell, 40, of Oxford, operating a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, was traveling south on Route 25 at 3 pm January 23. She was traveling behind a 2004 Saturn Vue operated by Madeleine Talluto, 17, of Newtown. Police say Talluto slowed to turn right onto Huntingtown Road, and was rear-ended by Arrindell’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Arrindell was issued a verbal warning for following too closely.

Drivers Receive Infractions

Newtown Police report Brendan Morrissey, 19, of Newtown, operating a 2007 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling on West Street towards Main Street at 7:34 pm January 24, while Michael Brown, 61, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling northbound on Main Street. Police say Morrissey moved through the intersection to turn onto Main Street and struck Brown’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Morrissey’s vehicle was towed.

Morrissey was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign. Brown was issued an infraction for failure to renew registration and failure to carry an insurance card.

Rear-Ended On Berkshire

Newtown Police report Diane Poswinski, 79, of Bethel, operating a 2012 Kia Sedona, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road at 9:19 am January 26. She was traveling behind a 2021 Ford Bronco operated by Dana Carriere, 30, of Newtown. Police say Poswinski accelerated in traffic and the front bumper of her vehicle made contact with the rear bumper of Carriere’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Poswinski was issued a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

DUI Arrests

Newtown Police report Carmelo Lantieri, 29, of Seymour, was arrested at 2:19 am January 27 on the charges of conspiracy to commit illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failure to drive upon right.

He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of February 9 in Danbury Superior Court.

Newtown Police also report John Riley, 24, of Newtown, was arrested at 3:44 am January 28 on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and improper turn or stop with no signal. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of February 9 in Danbury Superior Court.

Spun, Struck Rock

Newtown Police report Jose Villamil-Fabian, 35, of Ansonia, operating a 2008 Ford F250, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road at 5:40 am January 27. Police say Villamil-Fabian crossed the center line, spun 180 degrees and struck a large rock on the eastbound shoulder of the roadway before coming to a stop.

No injuries were reported. Villamil-Fabian’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Villamil-Fabian was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Hit Guardrail And Tree

Newtown Police report Douglas Brennan, 67, of Hollywood, Fla, operating a 2002 GMC K1500, was traveling westbound on Schoolhouse Hill Road at 8:01 am January 27. As Brennan approached the intersection of Teachers Ridge Road, police say he encountered a large area of black ice covering the road way, lost control, and the vehicle began to spin, leaving the roadway and striking a guardrail, then a tree.

No injuries were reported. Brennan’s vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Entered Lane When Unsafe

Newtown Police report Shona Evans, 33, of Newtown, operating a 2022 Subaru Impreza, was traveling eastbound on Country Club Road at 8:09 am January 27. Diane Savinelli, 54, of Newtown, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Police say a non-involved vehicle traveling in the through lane on South Main Street stopped to allow Evans to enter into the southbound through travel lane of South Main Street. Evans continued to travel eastbound and entered into the southbound South Main Street left turn only lane when it was unsafe to do so. The front right corner of Savinelli’s vehicle made contact with the front left corner of Evans’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Evans was issued a written warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

First responders speak with Ina Borenzweig, 83, of Southbury, after the 2021 Toyota Camry she was operating around noon Tuesday, January 31, was involved in a crash with two trucks on I-84 East between Exits 11 and 13. CT State Police report Borenzweig was traveling behind a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado K2500 being operated by Ronald Laconto, 47, of Dayville. Both slowed for traffic ahead of them. A 2023 Mack GR64F full-size dump truck being operated by Daryl M. Hardisty, 54, of Waterbury, traveling behind the Silverado and the Camry did not stop in time. The dump truck hit the Camry, which in turn hit the Silverado. The trucks stopped on the slow speed shoulder, but the Camry traveled across the high speed lane before crashing into jersey barriers. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, a Nuvance ambulance crew, a Stony Hill ambulance crew, and a Danbury Fire medic also responded to the crash. Borenzweig was transported to a hospital. Laconto and Hardisty were checked for injury but refused medical treatment. Hardisty was found at fault and issued an infraction for following too closely resulting in a motor vehicle accident. —Bee Photo, Hicks
