Winter Guard Units Sweep To Victory, Set To Host Extravaganza

The three Winter Color Guards representing Newtown each placed first in their respective divisions last Saturday at Brien McMahon High School’s “Colors in Motion” Musical Arts Conference competition.

The Junior Guard, made up of 17 students from Reed Intermediate School kicked off the evening with their first win of the season.

The Varsity Winter Guard, comprised of 15 students, finished in first place in the Scholastic National A Division, and the Junior Varsity/AAA with 8 seventh and eighth graders from Reed Middle School, finished in first place in the Middle School division and was awarded the highest score of the evening.

This Saturday, February 7, the Newtown Winter Guard program will host its 12th Annual Winter Guard Extravaganza, at Newtown High School. More than 30 color guard units from the tri-state area will compete at this event. Performances will begin at approximately 4 pm, and include a special performance by the Newtown Winter Percussion unit. The Junior Guard will perform at about 4:15 pm, the Junior Varsity will perform at approximately 4:50 pm, there will be a first half awards ceremony and intermission at about 6:25 pm and the Varsity will perform between 8:30 and 9 pm.

The admissions fees are $8 for adults and $5 students and seniors.
