Two municipal agencies have scheduled public hearings for next week on a proposal to construct a gas station, convenience store, and café at 26 Hawleyville Road (Route 25) in Hawleyville Center.

The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is scheduled to hold a public hearing at 7:30 pm, on Wednesday, February 6, at the Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street, on whether a 0.7-acre site at 26 Hawleyville Road is a suitable location for the proposed facility. State law requires local ZBAs to review the siting of gas stations.

The Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Commission is slated to hold a public hearing on the proposal at 7:30 pm, Thursday, February 7, at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.

NEMCO Ltd Partnership of Danbury is the applicant.

The site proposed for redevelopment lies within the Hawleyville Center Design District (HCDD), a specialized zone created by the P&Z in 1999 to foster the creation of a neighborhood business district with the mixed uses typical of a village center.

In September 2018, at the developer’s request, the P&Z modified the HCDD zoning regulations to allow a gas station, convenience store, and café as permitted uses in the HCDD zone.
