Basketball Teams Beat Masuk And Hockey Wins To Kick Off Busy Weekend

Newtown High School's girls' and boys' basketball teams defeated Masuk of Monroe on February 3.The Bee.

The girls went on the road and picked up a 37-20 victory, and the boys defeated the visiting Panthers 52-49.

With the wins, the girls improved to 13-4 overall, and the boys won their second straight to improve to 5-9. The boys avenged an early-season loss to the Panthers in a game that only counted in the state standings; the rematch also applies to the South-West Conference standings, and Newtown improved to 5-3 in SWC action this winter.

This was Newtown's Senior Night and Tom Cotton, Sam Grossano, and Derek Ivey were honored. The Nighthawks trailed 27-18 at halftime before rallying. Tucker Garrity led the way with 16 points as nine different Hawks registered points. Ivey had six points and ten rebounds, and Garrity had four steals.

Newtown's girls won their sixth straight to move to 8-2 in conference play. Nicki DaPra hit four first half 3-pointers for 12 points in the game, and Rylee Mulligan also dropped in a dozen for the Nighthawks.

On the ice, Newtown's hockey team came from behind for a 5-4 victory over Mt Everett, at Danbury Ice Arena.

On Saturday, February 4, Newtown High will host the SWC cheerleading competition, beginning at 3:30 pm, and the girls' and boys' indoor track and field teams will compete in the SWC championships at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, at 5 pm.
